Betty Raimondi is out of the hospital and doing nicely. Betty is the mother of Fran Pierce, daughter-in-law of Kathy and George Pierce and wife of Duke Pierce from 219 street where they are raising their two children. Kathy and George Pierce’s grandson, Justin, son of their daughter Tracey Waitowich, is 6’4’’ and on the Colgate basketball team.

Kathy and George are looking forward to their upcoming trip to the Turning Point Casino on a Native American reservation in Oneida, New York, even though it is a five-hour drive. And, since I have never been there I am anxious to find out how they like it. I am sure we will get a full report.

New Yorkers crowded around the world famous Rockefeller Center skating rink this week to witness the fourth annual Montreal Fashions on Ice Show. Jean Lecieric hosted this well-known extravaganza, unique in the fashion world, that showcased the Winter 2000-2001 creations from top designers. While the viewing was free tot he public, a lavish party took place at the Rockefeller Center Café where the eye-catching performance could be viewed in warmth and comfort. It was there that I met Gilles Fortin, owner of Tristan of America Corporation who created his first fashion retail store with Denise Deslauriers in 1973. He has five stores now in New York and 65 across Canada that feature classic European style garments for men and women at affordable prices. Sweeping, glamorous capes and shawls gave the Theatre on Ice models bird-like forms as they glided along the ice. Leather jackets and coats, trimmed with different shades of colored fox and children dressed in charming, adorable winter outfits made a perfectly pleasurable performance.

Later that evening, Jim Chladek, who is my still photographer now for these events, and I scooted over to the Players Club where Theatre Achievement Awards were being presented to Eli Wallach and Ann Jackson for their outstanding performances throughout the years. Celebrities were all around the room. Though I missed Ann Jackson we did manage to see Eli Wallach as well as Tony Randall and his pretty young wife, Heather, who bore him two children, Julia and Jeffrey, ages six months and one and a half. Jason Robots and Jerry Stiller we caught before the award show started. Betty Buckley was the mistress of Ceremonies. Jerry Stiller and Ann Mira did one of their famous skits while the notable ones mentioned above recalled momentous, memorable moments with the long wed couple who worked and played and lived together so many, many years. It was an inspiring and unforgettable evening.

Until February 4 Restaurant Week offers a three-course lunch menu for $20. Aquavit at 13 West 54 street is one of the participants, however, there are many more around town. Aquavit also has a five-course tasting dinner . . . not at the same price I’m sure, but you can check.

If you caught me on WNYX-TV Morning News this week you saw the great novel items I picked up at the Gift Show which has been going strong all week at the Javits Center. From Vandor Co. pink panther salt and pepper shoes that would be perfect for your breakfast table. Also from the same company, a kidney shaped pink and white pool ceramic dish with a pink panther sitting in a smaller ceramic tube fashioned after a tire. What is it for? It is your poolside shrimp dish with tube sauce dish in the center. Quite novel, and I am sure you really don’t need a pool to use it. Are your friends missing a hug from you? There are darling little figures with an inscription "A Hug For You" that has its own tiny mailing box to send to your loved one or friend. They also have a speaking spatula that says, "Hi, honey, warm my buns" and other cute phrases. Great Valentine bears and hearts with wings for Valentine’s Day. It is a fabulous show organized by Little Management and one of the largest shows of the year.

Artist, Karen H. Salup form Lawrence was at the Alaia restaurant in New York City where many of her works are on display. She has received rave reviews by the New York Times, ArtSpeak, and Newsday for her unique style and compelling vision. The B.J. Gallery in Huntington, New York is also featuring her paintings that vibrate with bold colors and bright light paired with brushstrokes that evoke a strong sense of movement and energy. I believe she said she knew some of the artist from the Rockaway Artist Alliance.
