Burned Body Found In Bunker

Police Still Investigating Homicide

By Joan Ward George

The badly burned body of a man was found at approximately 7:26 a.m. Saturday, January 15, by U.S. Park Police Officer Steve Balsamo. A source at Gateway National Recreation Area told The Wave that while Officer Balsamo was on routine patrol in Fort Tilden he saw smoke coming from the bunker area, where he found the burning body of a man near Battery Harris. Balsamo reportedly grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the flames.

Reliable sources note that the body was most likely dragged about a quarter of a mile to the location where it was set on fire. It was a badly burned body of man thought to be in his early twenties. Police were able to obtain partial prints from one hand. They believe the body was ignited with gasoline.

The homicide is still under investigation by both the United States Park Police and the 100 Precinct. Local police remained extremely close-mouthed about any information that they have come up with dealing with the homicide and refused to release any details to The Wave.
