Mr.Glib, bartender at Kennedy’s and the summer Sugar Bowl, Paul Kavanaugh, has been released from Kings Parkway Community Hospital after a bout with pneumonia. He is recovering nicely and we all wish him well.
Tom Callahan, who also made a remarkable recovery from his illness, brunched with his daughter Christine who is enjoying a successful career with J.P. Morgan where she holds the position of President of Private Banking. Her husband, Terrence, who was there with her, is a teacher and coach of the basketball team at Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Ellen and Lenny Wunder entertained Lenny’s daughter, Mary, her husband, Kevin O’Brien and their little daughter, Katie, last week. They brunched with Ellen’s children and grandchildren. This must be their farewell meal before leaving for Deerfield Park, Florida for their winter stay. They shall return the end of April.
The snow birds picked a good time to leave the Rockaways. Just in time to miss out on the brrrr. . . .chilly, week.
The National Retail Federation show was at the Javit’s Center this week and it was fascinating how our new advanced technology has advanced our way of selling and buying. It is a consumer’s dream. Top awards were presented to Sophora, one of the largest perfume and cosmetics stores around the country and to Crate and Barrel for their outstanding style of marketing, sleek design stores with quality for the price you can afford.
Remember the Brasserie Restaurant at 100 East 32 street that has been closed for five years? Well, it just opened recently and I attended a press dinner there. The food was just heavenly. . .oysters, escargots and my entree of braised veal shank was to die for. . .prepared very much on the order of Osa Buca. Jim Chladek had the crispy skin salmon over spinach and seven vegetable couscous that that looked divine. And, the desserts were marvelous. . .poached pear and caramelized ice cream. A great, great menu to satisfy the most discerning taste. The waiters were so warm and friendly and couldn’t do enough o add to the pleasurable evening.
The restaurant has all been completely renovated preserving it’s warmth and hospitality of the Soho appeal while giving it an urbane, cutting-edge look. Guests enter through the familiar revolving glass doors. The dramatic staircase leading down to the main dining area has been extended and reconstructed in solid glass giving theatrical quality to each arrival. It overlooks the champagne bar serving all sorts of liquors and beers along with bar food. A strip of video monitors above the bar allow the guests to see themselves and others arriving. It is a spectacular addition to the New York restaurant scene that should give all New Yorkers a special appreciation for the return of the Brasserie; even better than it was before. With the great cuisine service and ambience they can’t miss. Make it a must on your list. They are open for breakfast, Monday through Friday, Sunday Brunch, weekday lunch and for dinner and late night dining.
Christian Dior thew a fabulous champagne cocktail reception at their beautiful new store at 19 East 57 street. Up on the 24 floor where guests were sent was unbelievable. You stepped out of the elevator into a huge round room all encased in glass. To the right the magnificent Gold Crown Building glistened through the glass windows. It was a quite a sight. In the center of the room was a round bar that made it a perfect setting for a party. And, a gala party it was! All to launch their new perfume called "J’adore" that has a light woody fragrance. . .though strong enough o lure any man to your side. A special evening with elegant people.
