Flippers Defend Championship

By Maureen Gigliello

Lady Flippers of Stella Maris successfully defended their St. Francis
College Holiday Tournament Championship by downing St. Joseph by the Sea Academy 57-42. Senior Terri McElroy earned the tourney MVP with a dominating championship game performance that included 15 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and three assists. Senior captain Katie Raphael added 13 points and four assists.

These offensive achievements paled in comparison to her stifling, "blue collar" defensive work on Sea's point guard. Senior co-captain Kerry Feeney continued her stellar year with an 11 point effort combined with a whopping 18 rebounds! Junior Jeanine Kenel pulled down eight rebounds and chipped in with
eight points. Jeanine is proving to be one of the most creative on the offensive end as she pulls out a new "dipsey-doo" move more often than not. Senior co-captain Maggie Allen went 4 for 5 from three point land and dished out 15 assists in the three game tournament.

Prior to the Christmas break SM defeated Madison High School 59-42. Beth McGuinness and E.J. McElroy each scored eight to lead the attack. The Flippers then defeated St. Joseph Hill Academy 68-40. In this game, SM broke open a 26-22 half-time lead with a 42-18 second half offensive assault. Kerry Feeney (18) and Terri McElroy (17) led the way. On December 20 Stella defeated Tottenville High School 56-47.

On the next day came the "could've, should've, would've" game versus St. Francis Prep. SM trailed by one (27-26) at half due to a 17-10 second quarter. Junior Alana Bell stepped up by scoring six quarter points (4/4 free throw shooting) and pulling in seven quarter rebounds. Then came the third period and nothing went right. A mere three baskets and one foul shot put the Lady Flippers
in a 15 point hole. Not to mention the collapse of the rebounding corps. What's that saying about "sleeping giants"? Bell, Kenel and Feeney awoke and combined for 16 fourth quarter points and reclaimed the defensive boards. Perimeter pressure ala Raphael, Allen and McElroy stifled the Terrier offense and held them to one quarter basket. Prep went 3 for 14 from the charity
stripe giving the Lady Flippers ample opportunity to cash in. Down by three with five seconds left... a real tough loss 56-53.

Which brings us up to last week's games. On January 4, SM traveled to St. Edmund's and defeated the Eagles 75-24. All Lady Flippers scored and were led by Kenel's 13 and Deirdre Roberts' seven (including a trey). Which brings us up to Christ the King. The Lady Flippers and the Royals had last played on
January 6. The game was lousy and Stella absorbed a 68-22 loss. New millennium, new attitude, clean shooting shirts, better game. Still a league loss (1-3), but definitely a momentum keeper. Final score 59-48. Claire Droesch led all scorers with 19. For Stella, Feeney (14), T. McElroy (12) and Kenel (10) were the high scorers with E.J. McElroy and Dawn Gallagher going strong to the basket in the final period.

Flipper Footnotes: KE, we hardly knew ya! You are already missed. Next home game is January 20 versus Mary Louis Academy at 4:30 p.m. Ladies, you look marvelous in
your warm-ups! Now let's work on keeping them. A big thank you to the alum who helped us out last Friday, it was good to see you.
