Credit Due

Dear Editor;

There have been many times when we have felt frustrated in angry with our elected officials for their apparent lack of concern for our community needs. I have expressed this melancholy both verbally and in writing, the inept quality of life here in Sommerville and in Arverne. I should also be as quick to commend our elected officials, when they have successfully demonstrate a real effort to effect change. They have combined their efforts with NYC Department of Health, NYC Department of Parks and Recreations and several city, state and federal agencies to combat the mosquitoes and Dubois State Park that have plagued us for years. They have formed a mosquito control task force.

Finally, there will be cleaning of Dubois State Park. The cleaning of debris (preventative maintenance) in the park will start in a couple of weeks. This task force will be meeting next month to determine the best way to continue to take positive actions to help eliminate some if not most of the discomfort of the mosquito problem.

So, let me take this time to personally thank all of them.

Juanita Watkins - councilwoman, Pauline Rhodd Cummings- assemblywoman, Gregory Meeks- congressman, Claire Shulman - borough president, and Jonathan Gaska- district manger.

Let me also acknowledge our local paper, The Wave, and the Arverne Civic Association and Pat Jordan for their efforts. Together we have made a difference!

The year 2000 should bring a lot of hope for us. We as a community must strive to get involved. We can no longer display that aloofness. We must get involved! To often we sit back and complain about everything around us but do noting to improve things!

We want our community to be one we can all be proud of! The Arverne Civic Association is asking for a commitment from you! We can not do it alone. We have demonstrated that we can get the officials and the state, federal and city agencies to work on our behalf. Now, we need the commitment from you, our neighbors.

You have to care. If you don’t care, who will? Please come out and be apart of the solution instead of part of the problem. Looking forward to seeing you at the next civic meeting.
