A Jewel Of A School

Dear Editor;

It is usually a cold night in December when Benjamin N. Cardozo MS 198 magically becomes Mr. Mendoza MS 198. That happened last Wednesday night, December 22. The band treated the audience to their usual fine performance of seasonal selections. Graduates of 198 always return to support and help Mr. Mendoza, who is now their trusted friend. This year, the winter concert had several magnificent additions. Ms. Danielle Moton, the Gifted and Talented teacher, and a former student of MS 198 principal, Ms. Longo, produced and directed this millennium show.

Ms. Moton composed a new school song for the occasion, and the middle school chorus sang it with gusto and wonderful sincerity. Then, the show proceeded chronologically through the last 50 years of this century with selections from Grease, Soul Train, TLC, and Michael Jackson. The choreography was spectacular. Every student was in step and dancing with all their hearts. A very moving signing selection was done perfectly.

Ms. Selena Bailey, and her elementary school chorus, serenaded the audience with two Christmas carols. The first carol started out slowly, it then turned to a very lively carol done to perfection. While singing the second carol the children did several parts to perfection, and the harmony part was rhapsodic. These are the "babies" of 198, and already they are showing much talent.

Ms. Maxine Majied, a former student of 198, created a "step" number with her students. This selection is a lot more than "step". The students clapped, stepped, and told two stories with precision that would rival the Rockettes.

There was no dark winter solstice on December 22, 1999, at MS 198. This school was shining like a "jewel".
