We're Nobody's Fool!

Touché Mayor Giuliani! You thought you could pull a fast one on Rockaway by closing Neponsit Health Care Center in an "emergency" situation and then wanting to sell the land. When that didn't work, you called for the property to be demolished--all traces of evidence to be destroyed. Well, Rockaway may be a small community, and you might think half of us are loony, but we're tired of getting the royal your know what from the City of New York. And now, the courts have backed us up and Neponsit can not, and will not, be demolished.

Last week Justice David Goldstein ruled that the city council has the right to determine the future of Neponsit. Now heading the "investigation" will be Speaker Peter Vallone. Vallone has made it clear that he intends to run for mayor in the next election. If so, his opportunity to do well with Rockaway voters lies in his future handling of Neponsit.

Neponsit was a good neighbor. The facility provided jobs for many locals, adding to the economy of the community. It provided a home, and sometimes the final destination, for many elderly patients.

Some residents, and local elected officials, didn't fight the city's call for a park after the facility was closed. That's all we need--another park. Nothing less then the return of Neponsit Health Care Center should be expected.

Lew Simon should be credited for keeping the fight up to return Neponsit. While other politicians went on to the next "popular" issue, Lew never kept quiet on Neponsit. He attended meetings of the Health and Hospitals Corporation, wrote letters and demanded answers.

Even though the future of the facility is still unclear, things are heading in a better direction. Now it is time to lobby the entire city council, Speaker Vallone, and our councilman, Al Stabile, to make the necessary repairs at Neponsit and bring back the facility.

And then Mayor Giuliani and the City of New York will know that you can't mess around with Rockaway anymore!
