Robert P. Callahan, Born In Rockaway

Robert P. Callahan died on December 13, 1999 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was 46 years old.

He was the son of Anne and Andy Callahan of Monroe, New York.

Robert is survived by his wife Karen; children Craig, Meghan and Danny; brothers Denis and Kevin; sisters Patricia Brier, Geraldine Callahan and Eileen Lux; aunts Sister Grace Andrew, Joan Kinneary and Peggy Hazel; uncles John and Arty; and a host of cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.

Private services were held in Raleigh, North Carolina.

A memorial mass for Robert was held on Thursday, December 23 at St. Mary’s in Washingtonville, New York for family and friends.

Thomas D. Cavanagh,
From Broad Channel

Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas D. Cavanagh was celebrated on December 21, 1999 at St. Virgilius Church in Broad Channel.

Thomas was a long-time Broad Channel resident who worked for the New York City Department of Sanitation. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife Patricia; sons Thomas, Patrick, Kevin and Shawn; daughters-in-law Deirdre and Elizabeth; grandchildren Sarah, Patrick, Johanna, Kevin, Thomas and Kaitlyn; and brothers Peter and Brian.

Private services were held under the direction of Hillebrand Funeral Home of Broad Channel.

Osvaldo Fernandez,
From Far Rockaway

Osvaldo Fernandez died on December 16, 1999 in St. Vincent’s Hospital, New York City.

Born in Uruguay, Osvaldo worked in apartment maintenance.

He is survived by his wife Blanca Fernandez; son Osvaldo Fernandez; daughter Sibila Simon; son-in-law Ricardo Simon; daughter-in-law Marlene Fernandez; brother Oldemar Fernandez; grandchildren Sole, Genie, Vickie, Vale and Alex.

Private services were held under the direction of Lawrence Funeral Chapel, Inc., of Lawrence.

Veronica (Rita) Fox

Rockaway Point Resident

Mass of Christian Burial for Veronica (Rita) Fox was celebrated on Wednesday, December 22 at St. Genevieve’s Church in Rockaway Point.

Rita was a Rockaway Point resident for 25 years, coming from Brooklyn.

She worked as a legal secretary for Sullivan and Cromwell. Rita also taught CCD for 22 years at St. Genevieve’s.

Rita is survived by her husband James T.; sons Kevin and James; daughter Patricia McGoorty (husband, Joseph); mother Veronica Sweeney; sisters Joan Fitzgerald and Regina Monahan; and grandson Joseph McGoorty.

She is predeceased by her sister, the late Eileen Simone.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway Park, was held at Calverton National Cemetery.

Frank X. Hussey

World War II Veteran

Mass of Christian Burial for Frank X. Hussey was celebrated on Monday, December 20 at St. Camillus Church.
Frank lived in Rockaway Beach since 1978, coming from Richmond Hill.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Frank worked as a salesman for a roof installation company.

He was a past Commander of the American Legion Post 118, a lifetime member of Daniel M. O’Connell Post 272 and a member of the Knights of Columbus Rockaway Council.

Widower of the late Florence, Frank is survived by his wife Catherine (nee Heinz); daughters Lorraine Schaefer (husband, Jack), Kathy Coogan (husband, Bob) and Alice Jones (husband, Dave); sister Evelyn Purngagen; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Long Island National Cemetery.
