Chatting With Chapey
As the year approaches the new millennium we start to reflect on the
important and enjoyable things that happened during this year.
One very significant event that stands out in my mind was the
Carmel Quinn concert. It was an outstanding evening. Carmel sang a
combination of old and new songs to the delight of everyone. I would like
to thank Mary Kelly and Jeanette Israel for sponsoring the activity. After
several standing ovations it was obvious by everyone's reaction that no one
wanted the evening to end.
During the week here are some of the events I attended:
Connie Grabowski, the president of our South Side Democratic Club in Ozone Park, sponsored a very informative meeting. Several new members added to the lively discussion. Come and join us on the last Monday of every month at 7:45 at 95-09 101 avenue. Our next meeting is on December 27, 1999 and it will be our holiday party.
Mary Lou Plunkett held her annual fundraiser for the children of
St. Gerturde's in Edgemere. Each year Mary Lou sponsors this event which results in raising substantial revenues for this worthy cause. It gets better every year. Mary Lou Plunkett is to be congratulated for
spearheading this event. She is an organized, generous and energetic
person who is a definite asset to our community.
We had the delightful pleasure of meeting with Tippor Gore, the
wife of our presidential candidate Al Gore. I was particularly delighted
to be joined at the event by Sylvan and Rose Klein and Marneea, Lee Ann and Jeremy Frankel. They are a very positive force in our community.
At the event we had the pleasure of seeing other community activists including John McLoughlin, the editor of the Wave, Lew Simon, Sara Berger and Andrew McGee. Former Congressman Thomas Manton, our Queens Democratic leader, Peter Vallone, speaker of the NYC Council, Borough President Claire Schulman, Public Advocate Mark Green, Congressman Joseph Crowley and other
dignitaries joined the group. Tipper is a very articulate person who is
able to engage everyone.
We celebrated with the Robert F. Kennedy Democratic Club at
Abbraciamento's. Melinda Katz and Senator Dan Hevesi are the executive
members. They honored our Borough President Claire Schulman for her
positive leadership. She is the first woman to be elected borough president in NYC according to Melinda Katz. We enjoyed dinner with Bob and Nancy Mulholland and their two sons, Steve Cooper and many other
dignitaries. Alan Hevesi was a featured guest speaker as was Congressman Joseph Crowley. Several other elected officials dropped in including Speaker Peter Vallone, Councilman Morty Povman and Assemblyman Michael Cohen.
We enjoyed the tree lighting ceremony in Breezy Point. Helene
Hyland and Kevin Buckley gave the event a warm and welcome tone. Everyone enjoyed it.
