Soccer Team Victorious

In one of the most tension filled games of the soccer season this year, the St. Francis de Sales sixth grade girls soccer team edged the St. Thomas Moore girls 1-0 in the playoffs. It was a tremendous victory and showed the great progress made by the team during the year.

The team lost their first two games during the year to STM by
lopsided scores but in the third match, the girls played a tremendous game and lost by a score of 1-0.
Although both sides had many good shots on goal during the 50 minutes of regulation play, the score remained 0-0 and the teams faced two five minute overtime periods. With less than 10 seconds remaining in the second and final overtime period, after a mad scramble in front of the STM goal, Mary Kate McMahon scored the winning goal. This was Mary Kate's second goal of the year against STM and, in fact, she was the only SFDS player to score for the team against STM this year.

Outstanding goaltending by both sides turned away many shots by both teams. Amanda Boggiano made the save of the year during the first period to keep the score tied at zero. Clare Ollquist played goal for the team in the second half and did a tremendous job blocking shots as the tension level continued to mount.

Erin Casey, Jillian Nichtern, Melissa Tammaro, Mary Grace Brady and Caitlin Hynes all played tremendously well to thwart numerous attacks by the STM girls at our goal. Jenna Boggiano, Alana Fiorentino, Keara Savage, Alex Biddiscombe, Kristi Lee Moore and Danielle Donlon were all over the field attacking the ball and keeping pressure on the STM defense. They had numerous breakaways that would have been goals if not for the excellent play of the STM team.

Maureen Carey returned to the team as it moved on to play St. Lukes for the championship on Friday, November 19 in Breezy Point.
