Since we celebrated Veteran's Day this past Thursday and I have been flat on my back most of this week from a flu or whatever bug and have been unable to get around as usual I would just like to give your emotions a little tug and reminder of how grateful we should be to our unsung heroes who fought, and far too many, who lost their lives fighting for our freedoms. I always receive a great response from my poem about my young West Pointer who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Hope you enjoy it one more time. And if it pricks your emotions a little, may you offer a
Thanksgiving prayer for these brave young men. He was First Lt. Kenneth A. Tackus.
Looking Back Through The Years
Looking back through the years
At the foot of his grave
There's a young man handsome and brave
A West Point cadet in gold buttons and army gray
Marching along for the drill of the day
At a Saturday night ball
Their "Hop" in Cullen Hall
With a glove hand in my glove
We danced together and fell in love
We clung to each other
Hand in hand as we talked
Strolling along Flirtation Walk
We'd steal a kiss, a warm embrace
A hug or two….
That's all we could do.
The rules were strict
The work was a grind
A grueling four years
Though he didn't seem to mind
We'll grow old together
Till there's more than a trace
Of "character lines" upon your face
But, it just wasn't meant to be that way.
Under the swords we were wed
In the chapel on the hill
I can see it still
A conflict broke out in a foreign land
He was called to duty and obeyed the command
Missing in action, he was
For three and a half years
The return of remains could not stop the tears
He is buried here and can be found
Among other brave soldiers
On the Academy ground
A young life snuffed out
And, I wanted to shout,
"Let's have no more!
Dear God, keep is free from another war."
When questioned if I wrote this poem, the answer is by all means "yes." It was part of my young life and how else could I write it but with true, genuine feelings.
Enjoy the Veteran's Day weekend.
