Soccer, Tennis Teams Stay Strong
Bishop Kearney’s soccer team started of their year with two consecutive wins. They played their first game against the Mary Louis Academy on September 14 and beat them 9-1. Their second game, which was on September 28 against Fontboone, was another win for the Tigers with a score of 3-1. The team tied TMLA on September 30. Sophomore Jillian Fezza almost won the game for Kearney with a kick from midfield, but the goalie made the save. Their next game against Fontboonne was a resounding 3-1 win for the Tigers. Rosella Abate scored two goals and Siobhan McKinney scored one goal.
The team welcomed Sterling Paris back as their coach for another year. There were many players who returned from last year, but the team has grown since then. The 1999-2000 soccer team for Bishop Kearney consists of seniors Adriana Rodriguez, Cristina DePetro, Colleen Cassidy and Maura Clyne; juniors Siobhan McKinney, Rosella Abatte, cristina Buzzetta and Josephine Vitale; sophomores Elizabeth Garvin, LeighAnn French, Katelyn Lawler, Gail Brady, Jillian Fezza, Alison Bergen and Katie Carita; and freshman Meghan Ring, Michelle Santomauro, Lisa Vaquero, and Dana Raja. Lindsay Miller returned as the team’s manager.
Bishop Kearney’s tennis team has opened their season strong. In their first game they played Bishop Ford and won 4-1. Ford forfeited the second doubles match giving Kearney the 4-1 win. Their second game was against Fontbonne and with great playing by Vanessa SanMartin, who is also the captain, the team managed another defeat.
In Kearney’s third game against Stella Maris, the Tigers won 4-1. In the October 6 game against St. Saviour’s singles, winners Stephanie Campinella, 8-3, and Erminia Vacirca, 8-5, and doubles winners Regina Riccio and Laura Gallo. 8-3, led the team to a 3-2 win overall.
With Elena Gentile returning as coach the team hopes to repeat last year’s season. Players returning to the team are seniors Laura Gallo, Keri DeRoma, Meredith Murphy, Vanessa SanMartin (the captain), and Dana Rispoli; juniors Erminia Vacirca, Regina Riccio, Stephanie Campanella, cathy Pesce, Rosalba Mini, Gloria Gulmatico, and Lisa Centola; and sophomores Lauren Shaia, Stephanie Hatgipetros, and Jackie Siano.
Their season record so far is 4-1. The team has had an exciting start and is anxious to see what the season will bring.
