Rockaway Runners Bus To Bronx

By Joe Featherston

Rockaway Gliders sponsored a chartered bus trip to the Bronx for the St. Francis de Sales CYO Track Team and the runners’ parents. The team ran the famous flats and cow path over 1.5 miles through Van Cortlandt Park’s historic cross-country course. The youngsters competed in the New York Road Runners’ Fred Lebow Youth Run. They also saw college runners from CUNY compete in a five mile invitational.

Martina Featherston was the first St. Francis finisher as she won a gold in her age-group in a fabulously fast 10:56. Jimmy Hayden was right behind her as he won a silver in 11:05. Other gold medal age-group winners were: Stephen Werner, 11:15; Cristin Mullen, 12:05; and six year old Kilby Featherston, 17:20. Silver winners were, John Brennan, 11:47; Ellenoira Featherston 13:17; Andy Cruz, 14:05; Shinann Featherston 14:21, and Katie O’Sullivan, 16:30. Bronze medalists were Patrick Benn, 12:20; P.J. Mullen, 13:40; Javier Cruz, 13:42; Ralph Valencia, 14:35; Chris Keeney, 16:29; Suzanne Hurley, 17:28; Cara O’Donnell, 21:35; Mary Edwards, 22:10; Bridget Mahoney, 22:49; and Brittany O’Grady.

In the accompanying Road Runners adult 5K, (3.1 miles) which took the competitors up the storied and challenging, yet beautiful back hills, Pat Featherston led the Rockaway finishers in 22:20. Other finishers were: John Edwards 24:30; Frank Mullen, 24:45; Beth Ann Featherston, 29:30; and Kathy Edwards 31:07.

Gliders and St. Francis CYO hopes this becomes an annual bus trip for both adult and youth runners. Mark your calendars now for the last Sunday in September, 2000. Both groups thank all the participants in last July’s Family Run whose profits helped sponsor this trip and the team’s CYO shirts. Practices are open to all youths ages 7 - 15 from St. Francis and St. Camillus. Practices are on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. at Beach Channel High School’s track. The team will compete at Alley Pond Park on October 3, 17, 24, and 31. Contact Coach John Edwards, Joe Featherston, or Jim McKeon for more information. The national age-group championships will be at Van Cortlandt Park on November 14. It is open to all youths and adults.
