St. Thomas More Soccer
St. Francis DeSales hosted St. Thomas More Bantam Boys at Fort Tilden and STM came away with a 4-0 victory in this hard fought match. Matt Basmagy set up the first goal firing a hard shot from the right side that goalie Frank Utica deflected. Brendan Walsh charged and knocked the ball into the back of the net for a 1 - 0 first half lead. Michael McHale started the scoring in the second half advancing from his defensive position to put in a long shot from the outside. Keith Carlson picked up the third score of the game showing some fancy footwork and firing from the 18-yard line. Late in the second half Conor Washington scored the final goal when he broke through the defense and popped the ball inside the right post.
STM Intermediate Girls soccer team visited St. Francis DeSales and battled to a 0-0 tie. STM girls won the Rookie Championship last year against this very same St. Francis team 2-0. These two evenly matched teams battled back and forth for 60 minutes. STM goalie Kristen Conor and SFDS goalie Jackie Kimball both made excellent saves in order to keep the game scoreless. SFDS forward Maureen Hartigan had several shots from the outside that just missed the net with one hitting the cross bar. STM midfielder Mariann Montella also struck the crossbar and misfired high on several other opportunities.
Intermediate Girls next faced St. Luke and came away with a 7-1 victory. Mariann Montella came up with a hat trick scoring her first two goals on long booming shots and the third on a fancy move inside popping the ball to the back of the net. Nicole Crowley had two goals. Nicole had the first score of the game when she hustled after a deflected shot and beat the goalie on the right side. Marybeth Butler and Ashley Savage each scored once. Christina Morton and Kristen Conor each played a half in goal. The STM defense was led by Marybeth Butler, Anne Hughes, Katie Moran and Jackie Fede.
Intermediate Girls followed up the victory over St. Luke's with a 2-0 win over a very tough St. Gregory squad at Breezy Point. Both defenses played excellent as the score remained 0-0 for the first 50 minutes. STM goalie Christina Morton made a great save on a breakaway in the first half coming out of the net and grabbing the ball just as the St. Gregory attacker got to the ball. Christina caught a knee in the eye but held on to keep the game scoreless. With around 10 minutes to play in the game, Ashley Savage made a tremendous throw-in from the visiting teams' sideline. The ball took a high bounce out in front of the net and Nicole Crowley used her head to pop the ball passed the goalie for a 1- 0 lead. Three minutes later Ashley made another long throw-in from the same side of the field. This time Mariann Montella was there. Mariann controlled the ball, and fired a shot from right to left across the field into the corner of the net. Once again the STM defense controlled the field. Time after time Marybeth Butler, Katie Moran, Anne Hughes and Jackie Fede turned the St. Gregory rush away.
Next up for STM is St. Virgilius on Friday night at 9 p.m. at Broad Channel.
