From the G-Man…

Far Rock Actor’s Big Weekend

By Gary G. Toms

Hey people! Those of you who know Michael Broughton, in one way or another, may want to cue up the VCR this weekend. This actor and stuntman will be featured in two of the hottest shows in the fall line-up.

On Friday, October 1, he starts a recurring role on the CBS series "Now and Again," and the show can be seen starting at 8 p.m.

On Sunday night, October 3, he will be prominently featured in the highly acclaimed NBC series "Third Watch." For those of you who have not had the opportunity to watch this show yet, I strongly recommend it. It’s like "ER", but it involves the police, fire and emergency medical units and the situations they face. Michael Broughton’s intensity as an actor only adds to the level of excitement in this outstanding episode. On a "G" scale of one to ten, I give it a nine. Check it out.

In addition to these incredible roles, he has also managed to obtain a role on the enormously successful HBO hit "The Sopranos", and that particular episode will air in January. Michael has a major role, and it will definitely be worth watching. The producers of the show are very tight-lipped about the storyline, so I can’t tell you anything about it, but trust me on this one folks…..it’s hot!

In the feature film "Fifteen Minutes", starring Robert De Niro and Avery Brooks, Michael had the good fortune of working with these actors when filming was done in New York. There was an excellent photo, in the New York Daily News, of Michael and De Niro running down the streets of midtown Manhattan during a chase scene. The film also stars Ed Burns, and it will be released sometime next year.

It really is great to see Michael, a long time resident of Far Rockaway, achieve such phenomenal success. As someone who grew up alongside him, in the Redfern Houses, I know how hard it was to struggle and make something of yourself. There were those who were not able to keep the faith or believe in themselves, and as a result, their lives took a negative turn. They got caught up in drugs and crime, or they ended up in jail or dead. Michael Broughton is living proof that no matter what the obstacle, you can rise to great heights. He kicked Hollywood’s ass, and the fact that he is a Black man, in the Hollywood system, is even more astounding.

There are very few roles for minorities on network television, but Michael is breaking through those doors. I hope all of you Far Rockaway thug wannabees are taking notes. Especially the ones in Redfern! Positive actions bring positive opportunities.

A holder of four black belts, in four different fighting styles, he is widely regarded for his expertise in stunt work, but he is also an accomplished actor, and he is the recipient of the 1998 AUDELCO Award for Best Actor.

I certainly hope Hollywood is taking notice. I’m betting that he will indeed be one to watch in the coming year.

If you would like to contact Michael, for possible speaking engagements or seminars, you can reach him care of Legendary Pictures-P.O. Box 960236, Inwood, New York 11096-0236. Thank you for showing us that dreams do come true Mike! You are truly an inspiration, and we love you pal!

Be sure to tune in folks, and I’ll see you next week
