Fire During Floyd

During the night of Tropical Storm Floyd, the Parsonage which houses the church’s pastor at the First Congregational Church on Beach 94 street burst into flames destroying its second floor structure.

At about midnight, Thursday, September 16, Gordon Williams, the church’s caretaker, noticed flames coming down from the fireplace chimney flue. Gordon called the fire department and the fire was subsequently put out.

Fire Marshalls have yet to investigate the Parsonage for the cause of the fire. The unofficial determination was that this was an apparent electrical fire.

Some weeks ago the Parsonage was vandalized while the residence was vacant. The vandals removed the batteries from all the smoke detectors which would have prevented the extensive damage. The congregation is now in the process of rebuilding.

Second floor of the house where the pastor of the First Congregational Church lives was the scene of a fire on Thursday, September 16.
