On The Beach

With Beverly Baxter

When the news broke, I was sorry to hear that Wave editor and Boyle-ing Points columnist Kevin Boyle took his final bow last week. In fact, I may never forgive him! Aside from being a personal friend, and one whom I really enjoyed seeing on a regular basis down at the Wave office, Kevin added so much to what we enjoy as a community newspaper. He added a particular pitch,
a refreshingly mischievous tone, and a keen sense of the ironic to his work.

I enjoyed and looked forward to his columns each week. He brought a
self-deprecating style, a combination bad boy who fumbles and always dares to get back up again--never taking himself toooooo seriously---and god help the one in Kevin's company who ventures to do the same. He or she could easily be
the subject of a Boye-ling point or two! I think that's Kevin's whole "point": Life can be so absurd that you have to find the comedic effect in
situations. Aside from all this, I most appreciated his friendship and
encouragement and his unrelenting ability to challenge and find the truth in a story. A compliment from him, whenever given, always meant a lot to me. I know Kevin, you were wondering who the "Mary Richards" of the Wave would be writing about this week. I hope you're not gagging with boredom!! I just think you're the greatest, I'll miss you, and wish you well with your future

Love, Bev!

*****Congratulations to Bill McKeon on the birth of his granddaughter Bridget Claire O'Rourke who was born on September 14. Parents Noreen and Teddy O'Rourke of Belle Harbor and their daughters Sheilla, Caitlin, and Patricia are all ecstatic over their new little addition to their family. Best Wishes!

****** Rumor has it that Popeye's, a fast food franchise, will open in the
former Beach Drugs location on Beach 116 street and Rockaway Beach boulevard. I hope the rumor is just that.

******Hurricaine Floyd blew through our area last Thursday without the much anticipated damage. I was extremely impressed with Congressman Weiner who was
all over the news that day. This is a rising political star to watch.
Representative Weiner stated that the $3.2 million for beach replenishment in next year's budget couldn't come at a better time. My thoughts throughout the day of the storm were with Martin and Ingrid Ain and I kept hoping, with
regard to the dunes and protective beach measures, we wouldn't hear from them, we told you so.

*****If you were a witness to a hit and run accident on September 4 at
12:30 p.m. involving a green Bonneville and a white Toyota at the inter-section of Beach Channel drive and 87 street, then the 100 precinct would like to hear from you.

*****Celebrating birthdays Friday, September 24 were Mary Alice Lane and Michael Reilly! That should be fun! Bon Anniversaire Toujours!

*****I feel it in the air-- summer's out of reach!! See you....this weekend
at the annual Fall Rockaway Music and Arts Council Crafts Fair!
