Y2K Scams Alert For Seniors

Recent statistics show that approximately half of all telemarketing fraud victims are 50 or older. As 1999 ends, there is growing concern that scam artists may take advantage of the Year 2000 computer hype by developing schemes offering overpriced or bogus fixes to remedy the problem, and specifically target seniors in the process. To arm seniors with helpful information, the Better Business Bureau announces a subject report called "Seniors and the Year 2000 Computer Problem: What Should Your Know."

"No one knows exactly what the impact of the millennium will be, but consumers shouldn’t panic and certainly should not pay for unnecessary services," says Ronna Brown, president of the Better Business Bureau Serving Metropolitan New York. "Our information will help protect consumers when the scam artist calls."

Consumers who wish to file a complaint or receive a firm’s Reliability Rating, can contact the BBB at 1-900-5554BBB of $.95 per minute, with the average call costing $3.80. Consumers can also charge the call to a credit card by calling (212) 533-6200. In addition, consumers can write to the Bureau at 257 Park Avenue South, New York, New York 10010, or access the Bureau’s web site at www.new york.bbb.org to obtain the same services at no charge.
