William (Stan) Bacalles
Of Rockaway Park

Mass of Christian Burial for William (Stan) Bacalles was celebrated on Tuesday, August 31 at St. Camillus, Rockaway Beach.

William is a lifetime resident of Rockaway Park.

He died on August 28, 1999 in his residence.

William is survived by wife of Marie Mann Bacalles; sons William, Steven, and Gregory; brother Edward; sisters Esther O’Brien and Mary Lou Raaf; and grandchildren Connor, Brandon, Christian, and Ryan.

He worked for the New York Racing Association and was in the Korean Conflict as an airman second class in the air force from 1951-1955.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway Beach, was held at Mt. Olivet, Maspeth, New York.

Marion Vedelia Hamilton
Of Far Rockaway

Services for Marion Vedelia Hamilton were held on Thursday, August 26 at St. John Baptist Church, Arverne.

Marion, the daughter of Maggie G. Roseboro and the late Mose L. Roseboro, was born in Iredell County.

She died on August 24, 1999 at Peninsula Hospital Center.

She was a member of the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Statesville, North Carolina, at an early age. She was very active in the Junior Mission and Sunshine band. She also served as an usher and was a graduate of Unity High School, North Carolina.

In later years she moved to Rockaway, where she joined St. John Baptist Church. As a member, she sung in the senior choir and was an active participant in Sunday School. She was known as a faithful member.

Survivors include husband John Hamilton; daughters Carol Hamilton and Pansy Hamilton, both of Far Rockaway; step-son Randy Hamilton; step-daughter Janice Hamilton; nine grandchildren, all from Far Rockaway; her mother Maggie G. Roseboro; sister Hazel (Waford) Rosby; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. One son, Douglas Hamilton, preceded her in death.

Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home of Inwood and Rutledge and Bighan Mortuary of North Carolina was held at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Statesville, North Carolina.

Eileen M. King Of Rockaway Park

Mass of Christian Burial for Eileen M. King was celebrated on Saturday, August 28 at St. Camillus, Rockaway Beach.

Eileen came to Rockaway Park in 1972 from Brooklyn. She was a healthcare aide and volunteer at the Monsignor Ferris Center.

She died on August 25, 1999.

Widow of Robert, Eileen is survived by sons Michael and Richard; daughter Eileen Venezia; brother Thomas; sister Cathleen DeMatteo; and grandchildren Kenny, Terri Ann, Caitlyn, Melanie, and Brian. She is predeceased by son Robert and daughter Helen.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway Beach. Private services were held.

Catherine Laks
Rockaway Park Resident

Mass of Christian Burial for Catherine Laks was celebrated on Friday, September 3 at St. Camillus Church, Rockaway Beach.

Born in County Sligo, Ireland, Catherine moved to Rockaway Park 35 years ago.

She died on August 30, 1999 at Peninsula Hospital Center.

Catherine, the widow of Samuel, is survived by son Lawrence; daughter Margaret Strassburg; and three grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Inc., of Rockaway Beach. Private services were held.

Joseph Monterosso
Friends From Far Rock

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Joseph Monterosso on Monday, August 23 at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, Chestertown, New York.

Joseph Monterosso, formerly of Inwood, Long Island, died Thursday, August 19 at Glens Falls Hospital, Glens Falls.

Born on February 9, 1918, he was the son of Matthew and Santa (Morici) Monterosso.

He was a WW II veteran serving as a private first class and sergeant with the U.S. Army First Division (Big Red One) Cannon Company 16 infantry. He was decorated with a Silver Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leak Cluster, and Distinguishing Unit Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster. He enlisted on October 15, 1940 and was discharged on May 12, 1945.

Joseph was a member of the VFW Post 5513 of Chestertown, VFW of Inwood and American Legion Post 964.

He was the proprietor of Ace Pump and Tank Hydrolic Lifts for 20 years, sold the business to Gemco and was a foreman until he retired in 1985.

He and his wife moved to Chestertown in 1988.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn (Crovella) Monterosso, whom he married May 6, 1946; son Joseph E. Monterosso; daughter Teresa Monterosso; and sister Frances Fiorello of Inwood. Joseph had many friends from Inwood and Far Rockaway.

Eddie Love Newson, jr.
A.K.A. Bossman

Eddie Love Newson, jr., known as Bossman, died on August 20, 1999 at Peninsula Hospital Center.

Born to Eddie and Octavia Newson on May 12, 1980, Eddie jr. attended public schools and high school in Far Rockaway. He graduated from Hill Crest High School in January, 1998.

He worked as a service representative at Service Merchandise and tried to pursue his talent in rap music.

Eddie jr. is survived by his mother and father, Eddie and Octavia Newson; sisters Lakesha and Tavia Newson; brothers Remon and Remel Newson; nephew Dashawn Newson; grandparents Dora and Albert Littlejohn; and a host of cousins, uncles, aunts, and family friends.

Interment was under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home.

Marie Ayers O’Brien
Formerly Of Far Rockaway

Services for Marie Ayers O’Brien were held on September 1, 1999 at St. Joachim RC Church, Cedarhurst, New York.

Marie, who was formerly of Far Rockaway, died on August 29, 1999.

She is the widow of the late John; mother of Jeffrey and Elizabeth; grandmother to Katherine and Daniel; and sister to Daniel Ayers of Cedarhurst.

Interment under the direction of Lawrence Funeral Chapel, Inc., was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Island.

Mary Sclafani, Formerly Of Arverne

Mary Sclafani, an Arverne resident for 70 years, died on August 28, 1999.

She is survived by son Peter (daughter-in-law Linda), daughter Bertha (son-in-law Luke), and seven grandchildren.

Services were held at Our Lady of Peace, Rockville Centre, on Tuesday, August 31 and interment was at Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead, New York.
