Net News: It’s Playoff Time

It's the last week of the regular volleyball season with the finals scheduled for this weekend (Aug. 14 & 15). Since only one team has been mathematically eliminated, the games this week should be very exciting.

First place Abbracciamento's has a one game lead on Connolly's with every intention of adding to that lead in their match-up on 8/11. Captain Steve, from Connolly's, will be keeping an eye on any unfamiliar female face across the court. The Shady Characters and Tap & Grill can neither gain nor lose any ground in their game so hopefully they will at least show up.

In the playoffs, the Shady Characters will meet the first placed team while the Tap & Grill will match up with the second. These games begin at 10:00 on Sunday, Aug. 15.

The White Division still has a battle at the bottom and it is yet to be determined who will join Gantry's Pub and become an official spectator. Although currently in ninth place, The Beach House has become a more aggressive team and should they catch an argumentative Aces High team unaware...well, anything can happen. Just Healy's magic number is 1 to control their own fate for the first round "bye". The other bye position is totally up in the air. Psychic Hotline has to be a favorite to get the spot as they have been playing noticeably better in the past few weeks. Captain Tom will attack Jameson's looking for a sweep and that coveted position.

Bugsy was all smiles upon securing first place with his Roxbury Industries team and avoiding the chaos of the round robin on Saturday morning. It has yet to be determined who will join him at the top although the Shark's magic number is 1 and odds are in their favor to secure that in their first game on August 11.

The 4's Division, although small, has seen some good volleyball this year. As their regular season comes to a close, the standings only indicate who will play who and in no way reflect what the final outcome will be. If all the teams come with enough players, the winner could be anyone.

There were many teams unaccounted for at the Rugby Club last Wednesday night (as well as many other Wednesdays). The burgers were excellent and the drinks ice cold and quite reasonably priced, I might add. The backyard at the Rugby Club is large and comfortable and a great place to gather. The faithful group present and accounted were much appreciated by the sponsor.

The playoffs begin at 8:30 Saturday morning with the first round of the 4's division. The round robins will begin immediately following these games. The two teams with the best records in the round robin will join the two teams who earned the "bye" after regular season play and play a semifinal and final round on Sunday morning at 10:00 followed by the finals of the 4's division. It should be a great weekend of volleyball.

Good luck to all the teams.
