Louis Alessi, Policeman and Teacher

Mass of Christian Burial for Louis Alessi was celebrated August 11 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Far Rockaway.

Known as "Uncle Lou" to many nieces, nephews and friends, Mr. Alessi was a retired police lieutenant and teacher at Cardoza JHS. He died August 8, 1999.

He is survived by wife Lisa and step daughters Brigette Riddo, Yona Makowski, and Linda Spina; and six grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of the Lawrence Funeral Chapel was in Long Island national Cemetery, Long Island, New York.

Agnes Darby Of Far Rockaway

Funeral services for Agnes Darby were held August 9 at the Bethel A.M.E. church, Far Rockaway.

Born in South Carolina, she later moved to New York and became an active member in the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Far Rockaway.

She is survived by niece Mary G. Griffin, Cora Bull, Ann Goodwin and Iris Moore; and many grandnieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of the Chatmon & Benson Funeral Home of Inwood was in Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Long Island, New York.

Mary M. Faulhaber Of Rockaway Park

Funeral services for Mary Faulhaber were held August 9 at the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc., Rockaway Beach.

Mary worked for the Belco Pharmaceutical Supply Company and was a resident of Rockaway Park for 50 years. She died August 8, 1999.

She is survived by husband Robert; sons James, Robert, Thomas, John, and Patrick; daughters Maryann, Jane Forzano, and Beth Ferro.

Interment under the direction of the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach was in Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, New York.

Lawrence Globe, Served in Air Force

Funeral services for Lawrence Globe were held at the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inwood.

After being honorably discharged by the Air Force, Lawrence became a maintenance supervisor with Chasanoff Properties, He died August 4, 1999.

He is survived by wife Doris, daughters Jamilyah Abdurahman, Lisa Williams, Pamela Globe; sons Talmadge and Dwayne Thomas; mother Mary Bannett and many other relatives and friends.

Final arrangements were entrusted to the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home of Inwood.

Douglas Grady Of Rockaway Beach

Funeral services for Douglas Grady were held August 11 at the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Rockaway Beach.

Born in Rockaway Beach and a lifelong resident, Douglas was a truck driver in the air freight business and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He died after a long illness on August 8, 1999.

He is survived by wife Mary (nee Rizzo), mother-in-law Josephine Rizzo; son Richard (Amber); one deceased son, Douglas (Maryann); one sister-in-law Theresa Rizzo, granddaughter Diana and many nieces and nephews.

Final arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach.

Amy Vivian Kimpson, Educator

Funeral services were held for Amy Vivian Kimpson on August 7 at the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inwood.

After attending schools in Far Rockaway, Amy graduated with a double master’s degree from Brooklyn College. She became a teacher and worked at PS 42, PS 225, IS 53, and lastly at PS 105. She died August 3, 1999.

Amy is survived by parents Ada and George Spigner; sisters Dr. Hattie Spigner, Pernell Wittmer, Diane McKnight, and Cathy Johnson; brothers George Spigner jr. and Steven Spigner; and many other relatives and friends.

Final arrangements were entrusted to the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home of Inwood.

John F. O’Brien Of Belle Harbor

Mass of Christian Burial for John F. O’Brien was scheduled to be celebrated 9:45 a.m. August 14 at St. Francis DeSales Church, Belle Harbor.

A resident of Belle Harbor, Mr. O’Brien was a clerk with Con Edison who had also served in the U.S. Army (1954-56). He died August 11, 999.

He is survived by sister Ann Regan, five nieces and nephews and five great nieces and nephews.

Viewing was scheduled for Friday (2-5, 7-10 p.m.) at the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach.

Interment under the direction of the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach will be in St. Raymond’s Cemetery, Bronx, New York.

Mary O’Malley Of Belle Harbor

Mass of Christian Burial for Mary O’Malley was celebrated August 11 at St. Francis DeSales Church, Belle Harbor.

Born In Ireland, Mary was a resident of Belle Harbor and a matron with the eh Board of Education. She died August 6, 1999.

The widow of Thomas she is survived by son Thomas, daughter Barbara Renda and grandchildren Lisa (nee Renda) Blackwell, Yvette and Erik Renda; and Chip, Hung, Ri.

Interment under the direction of the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach was in St. Raymond’s Cemetery, Bronx, New York.

Arlet Pierre Of Far Rockaway

Funeral services were held for Arlet Pierre August 10 at the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inwood.

A handyman and musician, Arlet was very active in community affairs with the 100 precinct. He died August 5, 1999.

He is survived by wife Manuella, children Jerry, Leslie, Sandy, Sally, Kyron; mother Marie; brothers Arnold, Alix, Alphonse, Gesnet, Jean-Vius; sisters Claudette, Therese, Anne-Marie, Alide and their families; and many nieces and nephews.

Bennie Shields, Auto Mechanic

Funeral services for Bennie Shields were held August 6 at the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inwood.

Born in South Carolina, Mr. Shields moved to New York in 1976. He was an auto mechanic. He died July 31, 1999.

He is survived by his wife Julia; sons Bennie jr., Bradley, and Jeffrey; daughter Leslie Banks, Tayca Shields, seven grandchildren and two brothers and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home was in Forest Green Cemetery, New Jersey.

Kevin J. Short Of Rockaway Park

Mass of Christian Burial for Kevin Short was celebrated August 12 at St. Camillus Church, Rockaway Park.

A Rockaway Park resident, Mr. Short coached little league baseball. He died August 9, 1999.

He is survived by wife Carolyn (nee Foley); his mother Mae short and his son Kevin Jae; brothers Francis, Brian, and Thomas, and was brother to the late Cecilia Ann.

Interment under the direction of the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach was in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.

Michael J. Somma Of Rockaway Beach

Mass of Christian Burial for Michael J. Somma was celebrated August 10 at St. Rose of Lima Church, Rockaway Beach.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Somma worked for Catholic Charities and enjoyed handball. He died August 8, 1999.

He is survived by wife Rosemarie (nee Weinstock); brother Louis; brother-in-law Wayne Brown, sisters Sr. Mary Mercedes R.S.M. and Sr. Mary Corde R.S.M. and Marie Brown; and six nieces and nephews.

Final arrangement were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach.

Helen Noblett Ward Of Bay Ridge

Mass of Christian Burial for Helen N. Ward, nee Noblett, was to be celebrated Friday, August 13 at 9 a.m. at St. Anslem’s Roman Catholic Church in Bay Ridge.

A lifelong resident of Bay Ridge and parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Anslem’s churches, Helen was a retired executive secretary to the Dean of University College, St. John’s University. She died August 10, 1999 at her home in Breezy Point.

Just prior to retiring from full time employment, Helen became a founding member of Bay Ridge Ambulance Volunteer Organization (BRAVO). She resigned from her job as dispatcher at BRAVO after 20 years of service in 1994 and remained a charter member of the organization to which she gave so much of her time.

Helen is survived by her son James E. Ward, jr., of Breezy Point; two daughters, Ellenjane Gonyea, of Newburgh, New York and Joan Ward George, of Rockaway Park; seven grandchildren, Captain Donna Marie Ward, USAF, Samantha Elizabeth Ward, Matthew James Gonyea, Victoria Ward George, James Edward Ward III, Richard Keith George, jr. and Anthony James George; a daughter-in-law, Carole M. Ward; two sons-in-law, Robert Gonyea, and Richard Keith George, sr.; nephew Russell Noblett and niece Vivian Elliott; and many special treasured friends.

Helen was pre-deceased by her late husband James E. Ward, sr. and her beloved daughter, Eileen Virginia Ward; her mother and father, Ellen Mary and Russell Curtis Noblett, and brother Russell.

Final arrangements were entrusted to McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home, Bay Ridge. Viewing was scheduled to take place on August 11 and 12.

Interment under the direction of McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home was to be held Friday, August 13 at Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, following a concelebrated mass at St. Anslem’s.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that anyone wishing to make a donation in Helen’s memory send a donation to the Gilda (Radner) Fund (for research and treatment of ovarian cancer patients). Forms for donations to the Gilda Fund can be obtained at The Wave.

Joe Nathan Watford, Retired from Sanitation

Funeral services were held for Joe Nathan Watford on august 9 at the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inwood.

A retired worker from the Department of Sanitation, Joe was a U.S. Army veteran and loved sports. He died August 4, 1999.

He is survived by wife Jacquelyn; son Richard; daughters Qualisha, Aquasia, Jennifer, and Deleea; son-in-law Supreme and 15 grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home of Inwood was in Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, New York.

Veronica Young Of Rockaway Point

Mass of Christian Burial for Veronica Young was celebrated August 11 at St. Thomas More Church, Breezy Point.

A lifelong resident of Rockaway Point, Veronica died August 8, 1999.

She is survived by husband David, sons David and Karl (and Judy); daughters Helen and Jeanine; brother William and many nieces and nephews and she was sister of the late Richard.

Interment under the direction of the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach was in Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.
