Angels Soar In Orlando Tourney
South Queens Girls Basketball took there 10 year old team to the National AAU Championships in Orlando, Florida. They were bringing the team to get the experience of playing in such a prestigious tournament. Also, the fact that it was being held in Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex, one of the best multiple sports complexes in the country.
The girls started off by defeating the number one team from Utah, who was undefeated coming into the tournament. This win gave the girls just the start they needed. The team finished first round of pool play with a two and one record and a birth in the championship round. This in itself would have been a good accomplishment, but the girls were not finished there. The first game in the winners bracket was against the number one team from Texas, called Texas Freedom. The team had to watch Freedom beat the Staten Island Rebels the day before, a team which had defeated the Angels in four previous times they met. This time the girls would rise to the full occasion! The girls, after falling behind by 12 points, began chipping away at the lead. The fourth quarter was a classic come back. A basket here and a basket there, and then a three point shot by Corinne Howley, who scored seven points in that quarter, put the team within one point. With four seconds on the clock, Samantha Swenson made a clutch steal drive the ball up court passed to Kalie Caputo and with less then two seconds on the clock Katie scored the basket.
The team lost their next game which put them in the losers bracket, but that didn’t stop them. They played the Petaluma Chicks from California and manufactured another comeback and one point win against a very strong team. The next game is the game that put them in the realm of the elite. They faced York City from Pennsylvania, a team which beat the complete top teams and had to face two of the final six teams. The Angels soared into this one, winning by 13 points and entering the elite domain of the "Sweet 16." The girls accomplished this after only three to four months of being together. They are now number one in New York State and 13th in the country.
