Giuliani 2000

Dear Editor;

Much has already been made of the upcoming US Senate race between Mayor Giuliani and First Lady Hillary Clinton. The race itself is over a year away. But I for one have already made up my mind. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is my candidate. The main reason: his proven leadership. This man literally brought New York City back from the dead.

In the early 1990’s and before, this city was known as the most dangerous in the nation, with a skyrocketing crime rate, a depressed economy, and a huge municipal bureaucracy, which operated without accountability. Since Mayor Giuliani was elected in 1993, his community policing, drug sweep and quality of life initiatives have spurred a major drop in crime. New York is now the safest major city in America.

The mayor has also gotten tough on welfare and emphasized personal responsibility by starting the Workfare Program, which requires recipients to work in order to receive a check. Since then, thousands of New Yorkers have moved from welfare to work. The mayor also supports and has enacted higher standards for all students in New York City schools and holds accountable superintendents and principals whose schools do not meet them.

The city’s economy if also booming. Businesses are investing in New York again and a record number of tourists are visiting the city, attracted by its new reputation as being a safe city and one of the greatest cultural centers in the world. Look at the revitalized Times Square, for example! Take notice of the new zoning laws that the mayor supported that keeps strip clubs away from our children, schools, and places of worship!

Through his fiscal conservatism, the mayor has brought the city from being billions in debt to having a one billion dollar surplus. City taxes have been reduced by billions of dollars and job growth has increased.

Besides Mayor Giuliani’s many accomplishments, which is the most important reason we should support him, I have one more. Hillary Clinton’s bid to represent us infuriates me! I am neither anti-Democrat nor anti-Hillary. It is simply my point that only those who have proven themselves as effective leaders in New York should be considered for a US Senate position! That is why I wholeheartedly supported Democrat Chuck Schumer in 1998. Senator Schumer was raised here and toiled incessantly for New York and Rockaway for years. There are many qualified, hard working New York Democrats like H. Carl McCall, Nita Lowey and others who now will not run because of Mrs. Clinton’s "experiment." Mrs. Clinton and her supporters must understand that a US Senate campaign is no time to be learning about a state and its issues.

I hope that Rockaway will support our mayor for all he has done for our city and all that he will do for our state. Once again, he has proven his leadership abilities and knows New York. I call on all Republicans, Democrats and Independents to help me support him in Rockaway and elsewhere. I will be starting a group for "Giuliani 2000" soon. Stay tuned…
