Civic leaders, elected officials, and community activists will meet on Thursday, August 19 at 7 p.m. to discuss efforts to get Destination Technodome back on track.
Recently a member of the task force to bring Destination Technodome to Rockaway wrote a letter to Governor Pataki. Charles A. Gargano, chairman of the Empire State Development Corporation, responded with the following: "Please be advised that in order for this project to come to fruition, it would require a very significant amount of public subsidy from both the State and City of New York for infrastructure and other off-site improvements. Given the limited availability of discretionary capital assistance, there is some concern as to the level of economic return from this scale of government subsidy. Nonetheless, please be assured that we are examining all aspects of the Technodome proposal before making any final decisions."
It is the hope of the task force to convince Gargano and Pataki that capital investment in Rockaway infrastructure is in the public interest. Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro has stated that city investment is dependent on matching funds from the state.
The meeting will be held at the On Our Way Learning Center, 264 Beach 19 street (across from St. John’s Episcopal Hospital).
