Ban It Now

Dear Editor:

For three years Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has refused to let the members of the New York State Assembly vote on banning partial birth abortion. Sadly most of our local assembly members stood by Silvers side on this issue. Silver knew that if the ban vote was to hit the assembly floor it would pass, just as it did in 30 other states. We are now two votes shy from passing this law and moving this bill to Governor Pataki's desk where he has repeatedly stated and is on record as to signing the ban into law.

On a federal level we have Representative Anthony Weiner who if he is anything like the former Representative Schumer will also vote against this ban in congress. We are now two votes shy in the U.S Senate from overriding the President’s veto and banning this procedure nation wide. We have elected Queens officials who are representing and standing by the culture of death.

Partial birth abortion is the killing of a baby in the ninth month of pregnancy and in many cases in the actual delivery of the live baby. The AMA has stated it is never necessary to perform this procedure and is never needed to be performed to protect the mothers life. In fact the chances of a mothers life being threatened is when this procedure is being performed.

Most pro-choice officials such as Senators Patrick Moynihan and former Mayor Ed Koch have called this procedure "infanticide". Most of our local officials such as assembly members Audrey Pheffer voted against the banning of this form of abortion other members simply disappeared from the assembly floor when this ban vote took place in the chambers three weeks ago. Assembly members don't want to offend Silver and are more interested in protecting their "lulu's" (extra pay Silver hands out to those that he selects to sit on various committees).

It is time that the people of Queens to inform our elected officials to stop voting for the killing of a baby at this stage of life. It is time for the people of Queens to educate themselves and be aware what their local officials are voting for. We actually have more federal/state/city laws on the books with penalties of felony jail time or heavy fines for the protection of birds (piping clovers), animals and plants life then the protecting of human life in the ninth month. We cannot turn on heads on the extermination of children in the ninth month of life.
