Cop Run Over

By Joan Ward George

Police Officer William McElroy was run over early Wednesday afternoon near the corner of Beach 54 street and Beach Channel drive, in front of the Hong Kong Chinese Kitchen when a delivery truck driver unwittingly backed over the foot patrol cop.

McElroy received minor injuries to his head, neck, back and legs and was transported by EMS to Jamaica Hospital Center where he was treated and released later in the evening.

The truck driver from the A Dong Uan Trading Corp. from Brooklyn had just completed a delivery to the local Chinese restaurant and was backing out of his parking spot when he plowed down Officer McElroy. Apparently unaware that he had struck anyone, the driver took off on his route. Witnesses called police to the scene.

Responding to the injured officer, dozens of emergency service personnel arrived at the accident scene within minutes. Information from a bystander alerted cops to the name of the company of the delivery truck and the Brooklyn office was called. The company, according to authorities, paged their driver and he immediately returned to the scene of the accident. The Wave learned Thursday morning that the driver was questioned and released and that no charges were pending against him.

According to Captain Fries of the 101 Precinct, Officer, Officer McElroy was resting at his home on Thursday. The 30 year old officer had only been assigned to the 101 Precinct just a few months ago.
