Rockaway Turns Green
The Rockaway Irish Cultural Committee is busily planning its 18th Annual Rockaway Irish Festival to be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25 on Beach 108 and 109 Streets and Mickey Carton Way, from noon to 9:00 p.m. This year the committee is delighted to be honoring Congressman Anthony Weiner as Grand Marshal, Kathleen "Bobbie" Hart as Irishwoman of the Year, Frank Harnisher as Irishman of the Year and The Rockaway Rockies will be receiving a Community Service award.
Headlining this years festival are the internationally famous Black 47 and Rockaways' favorite native son Gerald Bair. Other acts include Andy Cooney, Pat Roper, Seanachai and the Unity Squad, The McCabes, The Moran Bros., The Conlon Bros., Raglan Road, Susan Gillespie, Gerard Corbett and the Second Generation Band, Gallow Glass, The County Tyrone Pipe Band, The Hirten Family Stepdancers and always back by popular demand, one of Rockaways' favorites, The Rovin' Firemen.
As usual the festival offers food and libation provided by the businesses of the Beach 108 and 109 Street area. Some of the finest vendors offering authentic Irish wares will be present. All proceeds from the festival are donated to the United Irish Foundation, a social service organization helping the needy with an office located on Beach 99 street and Rockaway Beach boulevard. The suggested donation is only $5.00 for two stages running simultaneously, all day.
