Softball Benefit For St. Mary’s
Con Edison employees are holding a benefit softball tournament in Alley Pond Park (Winchester boulevard and Union turnpike) on July 16 at 3:30 p.m. (rain date is July 23). All proceeds from the event will benefit St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, which provides vital health services to children with special needs. First initiated four years ago by Con Edison employees as a fund raiser for three Con Ed employees who were shot at a company work location, the benefit tournament raised $7,000 last year for St. Mary’s hospital.
"Last year’s softball benefit was a great success, and our eight employee softball teams from various company organizations are looking forward to competing for the championship trophy," said Robert W. Donohue, Con Edison vice president, Brooklyn-Queens Customer Service. "Company employees and their families attending this year’s games will have fun, and more importantly, will be helping to support the important work performed at St. Mary’s. hospital."
"We are particularly proud to participate in this benefit that helps St. Mary’s provide valuable health services to children," said Richard Grosso, secretary-treasurer, Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers Union of America. "Everyone is working together to make this worthy event a resounding success." Local 1-2, Modell’s, P.C. Richards, and several other local area businesses have graciously donated the refreshments, sports equipment, and door prizes. The NYC Parks Department has also assisted to prepare Alley Pond Park for the event.
