Joseph B. Arcario, jr. Of Rockaway Beach

Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph B. Arcario, jr. was celebrated on Tuesday, July 6 at St. Rose of Lima Church, Rockaway Beach.

Joseph, the son of the late Joseph B. Arcario, sr. and Grace Rivers Arcario, died on July 3, 1999 at Goldwater Memorial Hospital, Roosevelt Island.

He was a retired New York City Transit Police Officer and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964-1970, retiring as a staff sergeant.

He is survived by mother Grace, brother Walter A., and nephews Michael and Matthew.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home of Rockaway Beach. Private services.

Phillip I. Barnes Of Far Rockaway

Service for Phillip I. Barnes was held at the First Church of God, Far Rockaway, on Thursday, July 1.

Phillip was born to the Reverend Lonnie Barnes sr. and Flora E. Letterlough Barnes.

Phillip received his education at Robertson County Training School in North Carolina and joined the U.S. Army. He was the first and youngest deacon to be appointed at Cannon’s Temple Church and joined the First Church of God in Far Rockaway, where he was a member of Cell Group 2 and B.M.O.R.E.

Richard was dedicated to the Rockaway community and was a member of the civic association "People United for Local Leadership" (PULL) and chief farmer at the Fannie Lou Hamer Farm at Beach 73 street.

Phil, also known as P.I., was a great cook, artist and fisherman.

He is survived by mother Fora Elizabeth Barnes; wife Gloria; son Phillip (Pete) Barnes jr.; daughter Elizabeth Barnes; brothers Lonnie Barnes, Cornelius Barnes and Alexander Barnes; sisters Parthernia Barnes and Anne Adams; daughter-in-law April Barnes; son-in-law David McKenzie; sisters-in-law Gloria Barnes, Cynthia Barnes, Susie Barnes, Dorothy Green, Evon Hunter, and Cynthia Butler; mother-in-law Mildred McAlister; brothers-in-law Louis Green, John Hunter, and James Butler jr.; grandchildren Phillip III, Chante, Viquita, Teisha, Matricia, Daikuan, Quoquisha, Mercedes, and Maliqua; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by daughter JoAnn Barnes and sister Frances Barnes.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home, Inc. of Inwood was held at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, New York.

Richard Edward Huggins From Far Rockaway

Service for Richard Edward Huggins was held on Monday, June 28 at Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inwood.

Richard, the son of Isabel Huggins and the late Robert Lee Huggins jr., was the second of five children. He died on June 23, 1999.

Richard received his early education in Far Rockaway and Long Beach. He graduated from Boggs Academy in Georgia in 1973. After high school, he enrolled in Morris Brown College and graduated with a bachelor of arts in political science in 1977.

He is survived by mother Isabel Huggins; sister Regina Huggins-Robinson; brothers Raymond, Brian, and Robert III; nephew Reggie; nieces Angela and Melanee; and a host of relatives and friends from Far Rockaway.

Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home of Inwood was held at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, Long Island, New York.

Saul Janowitz Formerly Of Belle Harbor

Saul Janowitz, age 84, died on June 24, 1999 at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy, New York. Born in Poland, he resided in Belle Harbor for most of his life.

He was a real estate builder and developer for many years, past vice president of the Hebrew Institute of Long Island, past vice president and building chairman of the South Shore Yeshiva, a trustee of Congregation Ohab Zedek in Belle Harbor, a mason, and a member of Farragut Lodge in New York City.

He is survived by wife Miriam Linick Janowitz; daughter Eugene (Sherry) Grenz; son Sherman Janowitz; brother Arthur Janowitz; grandfather of Philip, Booke Anne, Hope and Sloan; and many nieces and nephews. Saul is predeceased by brothers Hyman Janowitz, Jack Janowitz, Louis, David, Samuel and sister Sylvia Lavnick.

Interment under the direction of Levine Memorial Chapel 649 was held at New Montefiore Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island, New York.

Delores W. Jarrels Of Far Rockaway

Delores W. Jarrels, formerly of Far Rockaway, died on June 11, 1999 in South Carolina.

Delores, the daughter of Rosa L. Whitmore and the late Samuel Whitmore sr., was joined in holy matrimony in 1977 to the late Vincent Jarrels. They were the parents of three daughters.

At an early age Delores joined the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Far Rockaway. On returning to South Carolina, she united herself with Antioch Baptist Church.

She is survived by mother Missionary Rosa L. Whitmore; daughters Ayeisha Watts, Rose Jarrels, and LaNiece Jarrels of Far Rockaway; sisters Betty King, Deborah Crane, Erica, Monique of South Carolina and Barbara Brown of Far Rockaway; brothers George Whitmore of Hempstead and David Whitmore of Far Rockaway; brothers-in-law Devon Brown and Tom Crane; grandchildren Armand, Starajsha, and Jah-Neece; three children reared in the home, Jaymie, Alexis, and Joshua; aunts Charles (Dinah) Marshall and Leatha Michael; and uncle John Phillips. She is also survived by best friends Ernestine Dandy and Laurie Moore, Shalonda Ingram, her goddaughter, and 26 nieces and nephews.

Interment under the direction of the Antioch Baptist Church of St. Matthews, South Carolina was held at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Joseph D. Morris… Born Here

Joseph D. Morris died June 19, 1999 at the age of 81 at his home in Mendham, New Jersey.

Born in Far Rockaway and a resident of Belle Harbor before moving to New Jersey in 1959, Mr. Morris was in the insurance business.

Survivors include wife Eileen (nee McAndrews), daughter Mary, and sister Alice.

Final arrangements were entrusted to the Bailey Funeral Home, Mendham, New Jersey.

Vinish Lee Norman, Family From Far Rockaway

Vinish Lee Norman, born in North Carolina, was the son of the late Florah McCullough and the late Elmer Norman. He moved to New York in 1952.

Vinish died on June 25, 1999 with services being held at Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inwood, on Tuesday, July 6.

He was an employee of Standard Cellulose Novelty Company from 1965-1996.

He is survived by daughter Millisa Lenihan of Far Rockaway; grandchildren La-Tisha, Sharieff, Karon, Akeenie, Sha-Tisha and Alisya; aunt Edna McCullough; special friends Harry and Selma Montgomery; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home was held at Beechwoods Cemetery, New Rochelle, New York.

Helen Francis Smith Of Far Rockaway

Service for Helen Francis Smith was held on Wednesday, June 30 at Bethel Temple Church of God in Christ, Far Rockaway.

Helen, the daughter of Lila Smith-Pue and Major Pue, died on June 24, 1999.

She is survived by parents Lila and Major of Far Rockaway; children Randella, Melissa, Mutope, Louise, and Lashawn; sisters Carol, Janet, Lori, Barbara, Brenda, and Denise; brothers Al Smith and Major Pue jr.; grandchildren Zakia, Nicole, Andre’, Traquan, and Ja’lel; aunts Annie Jeffrey of Far Rockaway, Salonia Simpkins, Vinnie Smith of Far Rockaway, Lillie Harris, Carrie Marshall, Sally Pue, Claudia Pue, and Peggy Pue; uncles Albert Smith, Willie Rainy, Henry Jeffrey, Pervis Pue, Timothy Pue, George Pue, and Joe Louis Pue; and a host of other relatives.

Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inwood, was at Plainlawn Mausoleums, Hicksville, New York.

Minnie Williams… Evangelist

Service for Evangelist Minnie Williams was held at Gethsemane Church of God in Christ, Inwood, on Friday, July 2.

Minnie died on June 25, 1999.

She is survived by her family from Far Rockaway; daughter Minnie Williams; son Ernest Williams; brother Grethen Poole; sister-in-law Mrs. Poole; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and favorite cat "Spot".

Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inwood, was held at Plainlawn Cemetery, Hicksville, New York.
