Lockes Love Cruising Cunard…

What’s the hottest thing in town? The Wave…the HEAT WAVE. These are the days your reach the boiling point before reading the "Boyle-ing Point". So, just cool it. Take a dip in our beautiful ocean and be glad you live in the Rockaways. And, if you don’t live here. It is only minutes away by bus, train or car from all boroughs. To our shores retreat where you can beat the heat.

Hope you got a big bang out of our Independence Day this year. My Yankee Doodle Dandy granddaughter, Erika Janine Matuozzi, was two on July 4. Mom and dad, Bettyann and Jimmy Matuozzi (my son), entertained relatives at a pool bar-b-que at their home in Island Park. It was a lovely day for pretty and happy little Erika who was showered with gifts from all. And, it suited the guests fine to keep cool in the pool. That’s the next best thing if the ocean isn’t handy.

Leon Locke and wife/crafts-woman, Susan, recently returned from another fantastic sailing on their favorite ship, the QE2. Their destination was the Canary Islands from Southhampton, England. As world cruisers they get special treatment and this time they fully enjoyed their spacious accommodations. They said the cabin was huge. To make it more pleasant they came across a couple they met on a former sailing. To bad the QE2 is going into dry dock for renovation. They may have to switch to another ship for their next cruise. Bet they still stay with another luxury vessel owned by Cunard. We’ll see. Glad they enjoyed their roomy voyage.

On the subject of Locke is another Locke. Francis (no relation to Leon) who just graduated from St. Rose of Lima and won scholarships to Stella Maris, Martin Luther King High School and St. Edmunds in Brooklyn. He is the son and step son of Kathy and Tom Cane from Broad Channel and the grandson of Cathleen McCormack. Kathy’s daughter and Cathleen’s granddaughter, Caitlin Locke, will be leaving for Maine July 13. We wish her well. July 6 Cathleen McCormack celebrated her big 30 plus birthday, daughter Kathy will mark another year on her calendar on July 23 and husband Tommy Cane will be 39 on July 27. How well I remember Harry Ashton from the BPSC who always celebrated his July 5 birthday the entire July 4 weekend. Congratulations to all!

This past Saturday, Kathy Duffy Leonard and daughters, Tara and Megan Esposito and sister Maura Duffy, attended the anniversary mass of their father, Thomas Duffy, who died July 12 some 23 years ago. How well I remember Tom. He was such a kind, gentle individual with an easy, even disposition who was always ready to give a helping hand. A happy go lucky fellow who is still missed and will always be remembered.

Kathy Duffy Leonard became a grandmother by her son, Tom and daughter-in-law Doreen. Her name is Kayla Fitzpatrick and she was born February 1. Kathy’s daughter Megan is expecting on her own birthday, Halloween. Dad is husband Bill Fitzpatrick and they reside on Utica Walk. Tommy Duffy jr. and wife Marie will celebrate the first birthday of their daughter Taylor Duffy on July 10 though she was born on July 1, 1998. Best wishes to all.
