After Hours Beach Save

Tubridy Girls To Rescue

What’s normally a fun, uneventful evening for a running club turned anything but as Catherine Tubridy glanced toward the ocean, long after lifeguards had gone home, and saw swimmers in trouble.

Catherine and her twin sisters, Jennifer and Jessica, stretching on the boardwalk with other runners who take part in Thursday night runs (organized by John Edwards of the Rockaway Gliders) suddenly sprung into action and sprinted towards the shore. They pulled off their sneakers and ran into the ocean. Catherine, a senior lifeguard, swam towards the swimmer further off shore while Jessica and Jennifer went to the other.

Once the victims were brought to the shore Jessica ran to the Fire Emergency box on Beach 94 street and called in the emergency.

Off-duty lifeguard John Fischer administered first aid on the sand.

After the successful rescue the four off-duty lifeguards proceeded with their original intent and ran the 3.2 mile running race with the other runners.

Public service seems to run in the Tubridy family. The girls' dad is Fire Captain Timothy Tubridy and their mom is an Assistant Principal at P.S. 114, Patricia Tubridy.
