From the Shores of Beach Channel High School

Beach Channel High School candidates for the graduating Class of 1999 who received scholarships: Who are they and where are they going?All three varsity football captains are going out of state on partial athletic scholarships:Ian Hunter-Central Connecticut State College; Emmanuel Depas-Allegheny College in Pennsylvania; and Jimmy Slavador-American International College in Massachusetts.


Salutatorian, Brian O’Connor, will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York on an alumni scholarship. He also received a U.F.T. Albert Shanker Award, Governors Committee on Scholastic Achievement Scholarship, and first for the Horatio Alger Scholarship.


Senior Class President Melissa Reyes will be attending DePauw University in Indiana on a full tuition scholarship sponsored by the "Posse" Foundation, who sends posses of New York students all over America.


Blood drive chairperson for three years, Julie Velazquez, will be attending SUNY at Cortland on a full teaching scholarship. (By the way, the goal was reached, with 61 pints of blood this year, a new record since the last drive in November). Julie was also offered a full crew scholarship to Dowling, an academic scholarship to Marist, New York State Scholarship for academic excellence and a CUNY Merit Scholarship.


Senior Vice President Daniel Torba will be attending St. Francis College on a partial swimming scholarship, all this well deserved after breaking school records and competing in the State Finals for three years. Torba was also offered a scholarship to Mount Union College and St. John Fisher College.


Partial scholarships were also received and accepted by....

Nuala Carrington with a Presidential Scholarship and a grant for Manhattan College and a New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence.

Marguerite Falcone with a Women in Science Scholarship and scholastic excellence for St. Johns University. Falcone also received a New York State Scholarship for academic excellence.

Tinika Sadiku for academics for The Laboratory Institute of Merchandising.

Joel Josiah who will attend Lincoln University.

Stacey Harris who will attend Keystone College in Pennsylvania.

Scholarships Were Also Offered to the following BCHS Scholars:

Patrick Drozdzik (Valedictorian)- NY State Scholarship for Academic Excellence and another for achievement; Oshea Eastman-NY State Scholarship for Academic Excellence; Joshua Gonzalez-NY State Scholarship for Academic Excellence; Zsuzsa Kovacs-NY State Scholarship for Academic Excellence; Natalie Jones-CUNY Merit Scholarship NY State Scholarship for Academic Excellence; Levon Howard-International Missionary Board Scholarship; Charisma Joseph-Franklin Pierce Success Grant; Monique Lawrence-Horatio Alger Association Scholarship; Nicole McCain-CUNY Merit Scholarship; Tasha McLean-NY State Scholarship for Academic Excellence; Susanna Narinsky-CUNY Merit Scholarship NY State Scholarship for Academic Excellence; Shaniqua Saxon-Horatio Alger Association Scholarship, U.F.T. Albert Shanker Award; James Stinchcomb-Maritime for Academics Dowling College for Athletics; Peabo Welcome-CUNY Merit Scholarship NY State Scholarship for Academic Excellence; and Danny Shaw-Telesis Grant for the Fashion Institute of Technology.

At graduation three students received awards from the Beach Channel Scholarship Fund: Hong Juan Lu, Steven Iannuzzi, and Gurbhej Singh.

Beach Channel Family would like to congratulate the Beach Channel scholarship recipients and graduates from the Class of 1999, wishing them much success and good luck in all of their futures to come and to always strive for the best because Beach Channel scholars are the best!
