A New Form of "Diss-ability!"
By Gary G. Toms

Hey people! I'm going to pick a fight this week, and this one's for my mother. Some of you may know her quite well or at least heard of her. Her name is Bertha Sutton, and she is a devoted member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Those who are familiar with her know that she is a woman of extreme caring and compassion, and she would do anything to help others in need. However, despite these attributes, she has been treated very harshly by government agencies, and I've got something to say about it.

My mother suffers from diabetes, and her condition seems to worsen as time progresses. Within the last year, she has been experiencing a series of bouts with neuropathy. This is a condition that affects the nerves in the legs, and it is prominent among many diabetics. As a result, walking is extremely difficult and painful from time to time. I can even recall a time when I was walking down the street with her, and her legs just gave out. She fell, but she did not suffer any serious injuries; thank God.

Since her diagnosis, other medical problems have surfaced, and I believe they are a result of all the running around she has had to do within the last six months to obtain disability benefits. She has had to endure long train and bus rides, nasty agency representatives, bad weather and severe pain, and it was all done in effort to appease those jackasses at The New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance and other agencies. They say they have to have this form completed, then that form completed. Go here, go there, but they don't take into consideration that the person may not be able to get to the assigned locations.

They practically send you to the ends of the earth to get the information they need. This is inconsiderate, stupid, unacceptable. They can sit on their fat rumps and collect a good paycheck with these agencies, but the people who need and rely on these services get caught up in the "red tape" and bull….!

My mother is my best friend and my idol. She is the pearl in my ocean of life, and if she ends up falling out in the street because of this crap she's going through, the government and these agencies are going to answer to me and a team of attorneys! She deserves to be treated like a human being; as do many others that may be experiencing the same thing. Although there are those who defraud the system, there is no excuse for treating everyone like a criminal. My mother is a servant of God, and if these idiots ever bothered to look more closely at the individual, and what they represent, they would owe a lot of people an apology.

If you're a politician reading this article, put forth some type of legislation

to address this disgusting problem. Don't wait for someone to fall dead at one of these sorry agencies to do something. It may be your mother or father trying to get some much needed assistance, when they fall dead, and you can thank the government for their unnecessary demise. This is for all of you out there experiencing something like this, but, most importantly, this is for you mom.

See you next week, and let the people you elected know "what time it is!"
