7's Tournament At Ft. Tilden

This Saturday, June 19, The Rockaway Rugby club will be hosting the 23rd annual Rockaway 7's tournament. This international event will take place in Gateways Ft. Tilden and will begin at 9:30 a.m. with matches continually being played until 6 p.m. This year’s event will play host to 36 mens teams in an open division, an 8 team social/B division, a womens bracket, and a youth rugby clinic.

The tournament format guarantees three matches for every side and trophies for all divisions. Some of the more competitive teams competing this year include the Boston Rattlers Rugby Club, former tourney champion Worcester Rugby Club, Eastern Penn powerhouse Philly/Whitemarsh and of course our locals the Rockaway Fisheads. Rockaways side will be bolstered this year by the additions of rugby guru John "Spike" Walsh, teen heart throb Matt "Head" Frank, and neighborhood legend Mikey Geraghty.

The youth division will kick off at 12 p.m. sharp and will consist of a session of drills and touch rugby to be followed by lunch and an afternoon of controlled scrimmaging on the main pitch. All children ranging from seventh grade through high school sophomores are welcome to attend. There is no charge and each kid will receive a t shirt and trophy.

The Rockaway Fisheads would like to invite the entire neighborhood to come enjoy a day of rugby right here on the peninsula. Come down and root for the Fisheads.

A post tournament extravaganza is set for the rugby club immediately following the finals, with live music by "Last Minute", and more tunes being spun by D.J. Nick. There will also be an awards ceremony with trophies for all divisions, a hot dog eating contest featuring OOch and Jim McCann, storytelling by George and Shevy, a boys vs. girls chug a lug contest, bikini and hot body contests featuring Ellen Cahill, Jen Perisi, Heather Reynolds, and Biff McCaffrey, belly sliding, human bowling, arm wrestling, mud wrestling and body painting, a talking llama, manicures, pedicures, and body waxings, a poetic reading by the Great Kazoo, tarot card readings by Tom Mulqueen, and much much more. You don't want to miss it.
