Something Must Be Wrong
There must be something radically wrong when students are mandated to pass through metal detectors before entering the classroom. As an added protection, armed police officers are assigned to patrol schools.
There must be something radically wrong when through the years children have been using the schools as a baby sitting service, and have been found to be deficient in the knowledge of the basic educational skills.
There must be something radically wrong when the media reports that teachers have been found to be functional illiterates. Is social promotion also practiced in higher education?
There must be something radically wrong when it has been reported that teachers are afraid of their students.
There must be something radically wrong when school authorities are fearful of making waves to the higher administration and weep problems under the rug.
There must be something radically wrong when the mix of disturbed and troubled classmates deter the teaching and learning process from students who want to learn.
It is incumbent and a responsibility that a school chancellor play a major role in the operation of the schools they represent. They must take the lead and set a precedence of strict discipline and a no-nonsense attitude. School visits should be made on an on-going basis, particularly those which are questionable and troubled. Finally, pushing forward to make positive changes.
There must be something radically wrong when a parent discovers guns and make-shit bombs in their child’s room and does nothing to correct the findings. It’s time to redirect the student interest back to the classroom, by possibly using innovative creative teaching methods. The laxity and breakdown of public education is now new. This should have been corrected and stopped at the on-set.
Here’s hoping that a new millennium will bring about positive changes, and that all students will be fully educated and successful in their chosen careers.
