Weiner Announces: Push For Jetties
Congressman Anthony Weiner this week announced an initiative to use beach erosion funds to build jetties and groins to protect Rockaway’s beaches. If the Weiner plan is adopted, the army corps could allocate as much as $3.3 million for such steps.
In a letter to Lt. General Joe Ballard, heard of the Army Corps of Engineers, Congressman Weiner commended the army for the $3.32 million already allotted to Rockaway beach replenishment, but suggested that the corps also look into the use of jetties and groins to maintain our beaches.
"I am concerned," Weiner wrote, "that the Corps of Engineers has not yet examined solutions for the erosion problem other than simple beach renourishment. I request that you examine Rockaway’s beach erosion, and report to me in the near future the extent to which the corps plans to utilize creative, more permanent solutions to this pressing problem."
Weiner is working with his colleagues in Congress to ensure that the Rockaway beach replenishment project receives the resources it needs. The House Appropriations Committee is currently writing the bill to fund the army Corps of Engineers and the full house is expected to vote on this measure over the summer. Weiner will work actively over the coming weeks and months to see to it that the Rockaways get the beach replenishment funding it deserves.
