Chatting With Chapey

OWEN BAXTER: musical star of the Philip Port Cancer Luncheon.
by Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey

Under the sign of Libra in the beautiful County of Cavan, in the midlands of Ireland, Owen Baxter arrived into this world - the youngest of six children in the Baxter family.

As the newest member of his family, Owen quickly learned to be inventive and assertive. Owen's sense of self emerged as he tried to differentiate himself from his brother and sisters. As he grew up, he developed a strong love of his family, an appreciation of his Irish roots and the ability to develop and expand on his creative abilities.

Owen came to America as a young man with talent, enthusiasm and a genuine interest in meeting new challenges and finding new horizons. Owen's love of music and all things Irish lead him to Rockaway. He came to hear the beautiful music of Mickie and Ruthie Morrisey in O'Garas on Beach 98 street.

As Owen listened to the many Irish musical legends in Rockaway, he began his own musical career. He was greatly influenced by the talented accordion player and singer - Mr. Rockaway, Mickie Carton. Mickie Carton's outstanding musical career even led him to entertain in the White House. Mickie was so fond of Owen and appreciative of his many creative talents that he willed Owen his plaque naming him - Mickie Carton as Mr. Rockaway. Today, in reverence to Mickie, Owen and Beverly Baxter proudly display the plaque in the Palm Gardens.

On Thursday, May 27, 1999 all who attended the 39th annual spring luncheon for the Philip Port Memorial Unit of the American Cancer Society at the Washington Hotel were privileged to enjoy the superb musical talents of Owen Baxter. Owen sang the songs on his new CD entitled "Owen Baxter: Celtic Country Rock". Owens singing voice is magnificent. He has a wonderful blend of Irish music with a country and rock flavor. There are 14 very enjoyable songs on his CD. In addition to having a superb singing voice, Owen is self-taught on the guitar. His talent for writing lyrics is particularly evident on many songs on the CD. My two favorites are "Lovely New York City" and "Princess Diana." If you enjoy good music, I would strongly recommend buying Owen's new CD. I bought two copies - one for the car and the other for the house.

Drop in at the beautiful Palm Gardens at 114-24 Rockaway Beach boulevard, Rockaway and get Owen's new CD. It's a great musical treat. Buy two while you are there.
