 Ernest Battle
Army Veteran

Funeral services for Ernest Battle were held May 21 at the Macedonia Baptist Church, Arverne.

Ernest was a veteran of the U.S. Army, being honorably discharged in 1944, He was a lab technician who enjoyed bike riding and cooking. He died May 16, 1999.

He is survived by wife Eleanor, his brother Johnny; sister-in-law Mary; two sons and one stepson; one daughter; grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of the Chatmon & Benson Funeral was in Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, New York. 

Frank R. Blackburn
Rugby Player

Frank Blackburn died May 21, 1999.

Frank was a professional rugby player in England, a carpenter and engineer, who later became Director of Maintenance at St. John’s Home for Boys.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Frank and Darlene, Diane and Marvin Birnbaum, and Donna and Dennis Otton; grandchildren Michael, Sabrina, Andrea, Kevin, and Brittany; his sisters Mabel and Anne and brother Derrick. He was married to Helen.

Final arrangements were conducted by the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.

 

Roberta Boone
Family Here

Roberta Boone died May 20, 1999. She had been a resident of Peninsula Nursing Home where she had many friends. Her family expressed their thanks to the residents and staff for being kind to Roberta for the last five years.

Roberta is survived by her sister Janie of Far Rockaway, a cousin, one son, and many relatives in North Carolina where she will be interred.

New York funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Chatmon & Benson Funeral Home of Inwood, New York.

 

Lorraine Bumpers
Of Inwood

Funeral services for Lorraine Bumpers were held May 22 at St. John’s Baptist Church, Inwood.

In 1961, Lorraine moved to Inwood from Alabama. She joined the Fist Baptist Church of Lawrence and became an usher. She was a skilled cook who could serve 100 or more. She died May 17, 1999.

Lorraine is survived by son Minister Thomas Earl Chandler jr.; daughter-in-law Evangelist Barbara; sisters Mamie Lee Westry and Jessie Brown; brothers Harold and Leo; grandchildren Kionna Thomas III, Reneicya, and Sydnee; adopted grandchildren Michael, Jerome Marcus, Tyesha, Brian and Shawn; godchildren Jessica Pharr and Janise McCoy; and the Pharr family.

Interment under the direction of the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home Inc. of Inwood was in Rosehill Cemetery, Linden, New Jersey.

 

Annie Farrelly
Of Rockaway Park

Mass of Christian Burial for Annie Farrelly was celebrated May 25 at St. Camillus Church, Rockaway Park.

Born in County Cavan, Ireland, Annie was a resident of Rockaway Park since 1967. She died May 20, 1999.

The widow of Patrick, she is survived by sons Patrick, Francis, and Hubert; she was predeceased by daughter Annie Edgar. She is also survived by sister Kathleen Schilling and Margaret Clarke; 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Interment under the direction of the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach was in Pinelawn Cemetery, Pinelawn, New York.

 

Sister Miriam Longobardi
Taught At St. Camillus

Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Miriam Anita Longobardi was celebrated May 27 at St. Camillus Church, Rockaway Park.

Sister Miriam was a teacher at St. Camillus school for 20 years, retiring in 1982. She died May 24, 1999

She is survived by her brothers Louis, Raphael, and James; sisters Lucy and Annunciata and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment under the direction of the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood, New York.

 

Edward O. McKenna
Of Roxbury

Mass of Christian Burial for Edward O. McKenna was celebrated May 26 at St. Genevieve’s Church, Roxbury.

Edward was a supervisor with the NYC Department of Water Supply and a navy veteran of World War II. He was sexton and eucharistic minister at St. Genevieve’s and was active in the community. He died May 23, 1999.

The widower of Catherine, he is survived by sons Owen, Edward, and Kevin; he was the father of the late Gerard. He is also survived by his sister Veronica Rokuson, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home Inc. of Rockaway Beach was in Pinelawn Cemetery, Pinelawn, New York.

  

James C.B. Moultrie
Wanted To Invent

Funeral services for James Carl Bernard Moultrie were held May 30 at the Elem Missionary Baptist Church, South Carolina.

James attended PS 183 and later enjoyed acting and computer classes. He was very good at repairing old things and it was his dream to be an inventor.

He is survived by his mother Curlene, brother Derrick, sister Zina; many aunts and uncles, special friend John Allen, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Final arrangements were entrusted to the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home of Inwood, New York.

  

Rafael Martinez Ortiz
Of Rockaway

Mass of Christian Burial for Rafael Ortiz was celebrated May 25 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Far Rockaway.

Rafael worked for the Studley Paper company of Inwood and had been a resident of Rockaway for more than 30 years. He died May 21, 1999.

He is survived by his wife Norma, sons Rafael jr., Joseph, Anthony, Emilio, David, and Noel; daughters Naomi and Carmen; sons-in-law Jeff Pincus, Antonio Castro, and Jerry Hammond; daughter-in-law Henrietta; brother Raymond; grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Interment was in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York.
