April: Fool’s Prices And Hope Springs

What happened in April? Sticker shock happened. The new lifeguard and comfort stations, The Wave learned, cost between $3 and $4 million apiece. More than $55 million would be spent on the structures that would be routinely ridiculed for their design and shoddy construction. In a sign that things were getting back to normal local politics started making the news again. State Senator Malcolm Smith was arrested and former congressman, Anthony Weiner, was hinting at a comeback. A group in New Jersey calling itself “Stop FEMA Now” was starting to gain traction. A film by John Sica, 7 Miles to Shore, a tribute to Dylan Smith, with rarely seen footage was a huge hit with hundreds who packed the Knights of Columbus. Construction of the boardwalk islands was going on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as Parks hustled to get the beaches open by Memorial Day.
