Large tracts of beachfront in the Arverne/Edgemere urban renewal area lay vacant and unused save for dunes and piping plovers.
Beach 32nd street to Beach 56th street makes up the area of Edgemere. Similar to Arverne, Edgemere has acres of empty land running along the beach. On the bay side, one and two family homes, mostly wood framed, line the streets. Several public housing developments populate the neighborhood, which have been the recipients of HOPE VI grants, millions of dollars earmarked for the overhaul of the developments, including a family center, new apartments, and improved upkeep of the grounds.
