Cyclones Appoint Tijerina As New Manager

The New York Mets named Tony Tijerina the manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones. The 2004 season is Tijerina’s 14th with the Mets organization, and his sixth as a minor league manager.

"Tony has developed a tremendous reputation everywhere he’s been -
among players, fellow coaches, and front office members," said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen. We’re thrilled to have someone of his caliber in Brooklyn this year."

For the past two seasons, he
managed the Capital City Bombers (A) of the South Atlantic League. In
2002, Tony was named the Best Managerial Prospect in the SAL by Baseball America.  In 2001, Tijerina was at the helm for the St. Lucie Mets (A) of the Florida State League, and from 1999 to 2000 he managed the Pittsfield Mets (A) of the New York-Penn League. Tony also served as Pittsfield’s hitting coach from 1997 to 1998.  As a manger, Tony has compiled a 290-277 (.511) overall record.

"It’s a great opportunity for me," said Tijerina, "and I’m looking forward to an exciting season in Brooklyn."

The Brooklyn Cyclones 2004 season begins on June 18th, with the home
opener slated for June 22nd.
