Dept. Of Ed. Announces PSAL Expansion

New York School Chancellor Joel I. Klein, Chief Marketing Officer Joseph M. Perello, and President of Snapple Distributors, Inc., Jack Belsito today announced the expansion of New York City’s Public School Athletic League (PSAL)programs, including the creation of over 100 new PSAL teams. Because of New York City’s partnership with Snapple, the PSAL will experience its largest expansion in 25 years,. It will create thousands of new opportunities for New York City public school students to participate in athletic and physical fitness programs.

As part of the PSAL’s expansion, 120 new teams will join the league next fall, covering 17 different sports and 76 public schools. Funding from the Snapple sponsorship already has provided and will continue to support a range of sports and physical fitness programs for students, as well as special events for athletes.

Last month 14 of the City’s top student wrestlers visited Moscow to participate in an international wrestling tournament. It marked the first time the New York City public school students have ever completed in an international wrestling competition. This summer, the PSAL will expand the Big Apple summer program, a City-wide summer sports and recreational program open to all middle and high schools students at no cost. In addition to these changes, the Department of Education will offer a new tutoring program for students basketball players at risk of losing eligibility because of poor academic performance.

"Our partnership with Snapple has enabled our City to provide countless new athletic and fitness opportunities for our children," Chancellor Klein said. " As we continue improving our students’ academic training, we are also focusing on our children’s health and recreational needs’’.

The city announced its agreement with Snapple to exclusively provide bottled spring water and 100% juice in the City’s public schools in September 2003. Under the agreement, which will run through June 2009, Snapple will pay approximately $47 million in commissions and sponsorship to the city.
