Chamber Responds To Tribute Park Hold

The following is a statement issued by Chamber of Commerce President John Lepore in response to last week’s front page story about Tribute Park.

The Chamber of Commerce of the Rockaways is presenting this update to apprise our community of the current status of Tribute Park.

Over the winter months construction continued and much of the work that was performed was not readily visible and included the installation of underground wiring and some plumbing systems. Additionally, other elements were under construction off-site. These elements included the stained glass pavilion and the ornate entrance gate. As spring approached, and we prepared to begin construction we were advised by NYC that certain elements of the park’s design needed the approval of the Arts Commission before we could proceed. The specific elements under review are the ornate entrance gate, the stained glass pavilion and the firefighter’s memorial. Based on the best information available, the Chamber was never advised that such a review was necessary and although this review will slow the building process pending final approval from the Arts Commission, we are prepared to resume construction as the earliest possible time. The Chamber remains committed to completing the park in the shortest time frame possible in a manner consistent with NYC Park’s Department regulations and the community’s vision.
