for larger version       Recent Spike In Thefts Reported By 101 Precinct
By Miriam Rosenberg Contributing Editor Executive Officer Alex Laera, of the 101precinct in Far Rockaway recently reported a rise in the theft of unattended belongings during April’s Precinct Community Council meeting. Unlocked cars, salons and hospitals are among the places where people tend to leave things laying around. He urged people to keep a close eye on their valuables when they are out in public and to remember to lock their car doors.
"We can prevent these types of crimes if [people] safeguard their valuables," said Laera. The new Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center is scheduled to open in Spring 2005. It will feature 60 examining rooms and is expected to serve 300 people a day. Jacqueline McMikle, Brick Campaign Volunteer for Addabbo, explained how community members could help finance the center by sponsoring a brick to be laid at the facility that will include a person’s name and organization. "It’s imperative, as a community, to come together," said Glenda Nesmith, president of the 101st Precinct Community Council. "[You’ll] be doing [yourself] and the community a great service by sponsoring a brick."
With summer just around the corner P.O. Mary Craine-Bachner, coordinator for the Far Rockaway Weed and Seed program, announced the 3rd Annual Rockaway Multi-Cultural Festival would take place on August 7. Plans are already being made for various booths, entertainment and raffles. Community members were encouraged give their input by attending the weekly planning meetings. During the meeting, Rockawayites were asked to open their hearts when Minister Anna Barriere told those at the meeting about her grandson – D’mani Spruill – who was killed by a stray bullet at the end of March. Her daughter is now in need of financial help. Community member Isaac Parsee was the first to give help to Barriere’s family. Finally, it was announced that the Rockaway Museum would be reopening its doors soon with a new exhibit saluting Rockaway’s Playland. In addition, community members were asked to support the museum by becoming members. More information can be obtained by calling 718 634-4000.
