for larger version       M.S. 180 Visits African Burial Site M.S. 180 students recently visited African Burial Grounds in lower Manhattan, as part of an investigation in forensic studies. Many of the students in the eighth grade graduating class asked questions concerning the discovery of this site. Students were informed that more than 400 skeletal remains and thousands of artifacts were excavated at the site. These artifacts provide educational and scientific purpose as well as pertinent facts for archaeological, cultural, historical and physical research and enlightenment. Each year, the eighth grade class is assigned a science and social studies exit project mandated by New York State. As part of the assignment, students must conduct research in the sciences and social studies, including forensics. The N.Y. African Burial Grounds, Office of Public Education & Interpretation (OPEI) provided M.S. 180 students with information packets to help them find areas of research and discovery – allowing them a comprehensive look at their local history.
