Man Sentenced in Assault On Rockaway Woman

A Brooklyn man was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison last week for a vicious August, 2002 attack on a Far Rockaway woman that left her blind in one eye. District Attorney Richard Brown, in announcing the verdict last week, said, "The victim, the defendant's girlfriend, was so severely beaten by the defendant that she lost her right eye.  The punishment of a lengthy prison term is more than warranted and I hope the victim receives solace knowing that her attacker can no longer inflict pain upon her."

Brown identified the defendant as Joseph Russell, 40, of 117 South Elliot Avenue in Brooklyn, a night club bouncer.  The defendant was found guilty on May 14, 2003 after a jury trial of Assault in the First and Second Degree before Queens Supreme Court Justice William M. Erlbaum who imposed today's sentence of 20 years to life in prison.

The sentencing was repeatedly adjourned because of post trial motions by the defense.

The District Attorney said that according to trial testimony, at 8:30 p.m. on August 11, 2002 the defendant attacked and repeatedly punched his 41-year-old girlfriend in the face and arm at her residence on Seagirt Boulevard in Far Rockaway causing her to sustain numerous injuries including a ruptured right eye globe and loss of her eye.
