BWAC opens its expansive Pier Art Show Saturday, May 8 at 499 Van Brunt on the Red Hook Pier in Brooklyn. The reception and the following weekends through June 27 feature live entertainment. The show is open weekends noon to 6 PM. Several RAA members are participating. For more information, log onto www. BWAC.org. Talk about great art/entertainment events, three hundred visitors came to last weekend’s opening reception for RAA’s two solo shows at Fort Tilden. "Galapagos Face to Face: The Photography of Holly Gordon" and "Jeff Berman: Art of the 21st Century" provided the stunning images. Singer Lynnen Yakes, pianists Eleonor Bindman and Jay Shapiro, acoustic guitarist T.K. Kearney and The T-7 Band entertained the hundreds of enthused attendees all through the afternoon. No one was deterred by the slightly overcast skies — the day was a celebration of the arts. Thanks go to the artists, entertainers, to RAA’s Karen McCallion, Janet Dever, Martha Killian, Mary Kelly, Norma Allende, Tina Sarquiz and, as always, to Geoff Rawling for all their hard work. And thanks, most especially, to the folks who attend RAA events (your numbers are growing and growing), who make abundantly evident the need and desire for the Rockaway Center for the Arts. These two solo shows continue through May 23 at the RAA galleries. Gallery hours are Saturdays 12-5 PM and Sundays 1-4 PM. Speaking of arts at Fort Tilden, "Nunsense" comes dancing and singing its way into your hearts from June 4 to June 19 at the Post Theatre. Take it from Reverend Mother that this is a very funny, entertaining musical. Who is Reverend Mother? I ain’t talkin’, yet. The next RAA meeting is Monday, May 10 at 7:30 PM in building T-149, Fort Tilden. Guest presenter is Don Riepe discussing the Littoral Society’s next trip to the Galapagos Islands. All are welcome. Bring your latest artwork. Whalemena, that beautiful lady on Shore Front Parkway you’ve been reading about, is looking better and better. Geoff Rawling, Esther Grillo, Kalin Callaghan and other RAA members you probably have read about are working hard at beautifying this shapely figure of the sea. The City Parks Foundation and Benjamin Beechwood LLC, the developers of Arverne by the Sea, are providing funds. You may not know that Mena was originally in the Central Park Children’s Zoo. She was to be evicted and the Rockaway Beach Civic Association campaigned for her to be relocated to Rockaway. So keep your eye on her progress – more bulletins to follow. RAA alert: The deadline for submission of entries for "Nature: Visual and Literary Expressions" is fast approaching. The deadline is May 14. Eligible works are original visual and literary works of all media and genres that explore any relationship between artist and nature. The next QCA arts-in-education workshop is "Program Development and Curriculum Integration," May 19, 5-7 PM at the Queens Museum of Art. Thank you to acclaimed writer Jill Eisenstadt, in her April 18 article in New York Times, for her recognition of the Rockaway Artists Alliance and the Rockaway Music and Arts Council for their work in bringing culture to this peninsula.
