RBVL Holds Volleyball Meeting In The Snow
By Joe McGivney

The RBVL ignored the April snow and sleet and held its first meeting of the year Wednesday 3/31 at the Kerry Hills Pub. Representatives from both new and old teams showed up promptly, making for a short but very effective gathering. Returning teams secured their spots with a $50 deposit. Captains left with the important tasks of completing their rosters, filling their uniform order forms and rounding up the balance of their league fee. This all needs to be done ASAP but by 5/5 at the latest. Items should be dropped off with Bugsy whenever they are ready. We know you used to wait until the last minute with your term papers but there’s no need for that anymore. New teams left with places on the waiting list and hopes of joining the premier volleyball league in Rockaway.

This year’s participation could be at an all time high. However, space limitations may limit the total number of teams accepted. Please act promptly. A side issue relates to our referees - we need more of them. If you know someone who’s interested please have him call Patty. Refs do not have to be certified to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.

The next and last pre-season meeting is scheduled for Wednesday evening 5/5 at the Kerry Hills Pub. The meeting will run between 8-9 PM and all captains are required to attend. As always, all players are welcome to attend and each squad must be represented. There are a few important items to be covered so please arrive promptly. Questions and answers will conclude the session.

After the meeting (at 9 PM), each team will be required to pay the balance of their league fee. Additionally, they should provide a list of their players to insure their placement in the proper division based on their level of play. The league’s goal is to have the most evenly matched teams in each division so that each week will be filled with exciting, action-packed matches, not forfeits and blowouts. Because of the short time frame before opening day, this information must be submitted on 5/5.

Last year’s 4-division format worked well and we should see many more tightly contested matches again this year. Returning champs, Just Healy’s, Rugby Clubhouse, The Big Mahoo shkas and the Beach Orphans will all look to repeat while being pressured by regular season victors, Marie’s Traitors, It’s All Good and One Win. (The Rugby Clubhouse was the only division winner to also win the championship.) All of the remaining veteran teams will keep the heat on as well and who knows what to expect from some of the new squads?

Hopefully, everyone has already marked his or her calendars with these important dates: 5/5 – final pre-season league meeting, 5/26 – first practice night on the beach. Uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Nets will be available for everyone. 6/2 - opening day. Play will continue every Wednesday until 8/9. 8/14 - league championships. Remember this is a Saturday. Keep your schedule clear. 9/17 – league awards dinner at the Beach Club.

The weather is warming and the April snows are melting; it must be time for volleyball. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 212-604-7087. You can leave a detailed message anytime at this number. See you on 5/5.
