Looking Backward 20 Years Ago... Arverne residents will rally this Satur day to protest approval granted this week for a drug rehabilitation facility to be located at 316 Beach 65 Street. "Community residents oppose the housing of drug addicts in our midst since it jeopardizes the safety of our daily lives!" read one flyer distributed recently. Detectives in the squad at that 100 Pre cinct say they have tracked down the Shore Front elevator burglar. At least 15 times from October 1982 to May 1983, the elevator burglar, using a large barrel firearm, mugged victims in the hi-rise buildings between Beach 74 and Beach 108 Streets. Firemen called to an empty, sealed bungalow at 116A Beach 24 Street, Far Rockaway, on Monday April 9, about 4:47 a.m., found a body with a handcuff on each wrist. When General Douglas McArthur’s death was announced Sunday afternoon, among the local residents particularly saddened were the veterans who served under his leadership. Excavation for the new Dayton Park sewer recently uncovered the former Ocean Electric Railway tracks in Fairview Avenue (now Beach 84 Street) and brought back memories to a lot of old timers. Since the statue of Christ was toppled in front of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, consideration is being given to keeping it inside the church in the future. This was the second time that statue has been damaged by vandals. The city’s attitude seems to be that come what may, it is going to go ahead with the Breezy Point Park plan, and there’s no word yet on the proposal to add some of the Fort Tilden reservation to the park. 50 Years Ago... Alarmed at the prospect of Edgemere becoming a "welfare town" with recipients renting bungalows in the area, the Edgemere Civic Association discussed the influx of relief recipients in the community. John L. Farrington was installed as the commander of Beach Channel Post 6191, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Mrs. Jane Sayuk was inducted as pres ident of the auxiliary in the presence of a capacity crowd Saturday night in Ryan’s Inn, Beach 85 Street. A 6-year-old boy was killed when he was struck by a car at the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 75 Street. The Somerville-Arverne Civic Associ ation will support the Seaside Prop erty Owners Association in opposing the Title One project in Seaside.
