The Inner Voice
by Marilyn Gelfand

My daughter told me that she realized that when she felt offended by what people say to her, she has to ask them why they said that.A0

She has discovered that what she thought they said had a completely different motivation than what she initially thought.A0

So now, she always asks, "Why did you say that?"

With good communication comes better understanding.A0It is so incredible that we all have different ways of seeing the same things.A0We can never put ourselves in any one else' shoes.A0All we can do is put oursel ves in their experience.A0What some one else goes through is something we can only imagine, not really know.A0

We can see the world differently than our own family members and friends.A0 It only intensifies when I believe that other people in the world have the same values as me.A0

It can be extremely naive or dangerous to believe that language or honesty is the same for all cultures.A0It is different for cultural reasons.A0Some believe it is okay to lie and cheat outsiders, but not our own group.A0Others say one thing in one language to their own group and something else to the outside world.A0That's why instincts are so important.A0

We have to trust in ourselves and at the same time communicate well with those we love and consider important to us.

Many feel that it is important to not reveal myself to the outside world.A0 It makes me vulnerable and controllable.A0 Sunglasses prevent you from seeing my emotions in my eyes.A0The more you don't know what I am thinking, the better off I am.A0

This is living de fensively.A0Others live with the credo, Do what I say not what I do.A0We must be careful to know where someone else is coming from so we don't get sucked into someone else' words or my own notions of what I believe the person is like coming out of my own values rather than where the other is actually coming from.A0
